Alas! How many girls have I met, and alas, how many

I have not met, and what a pity!

What are the names—on the night when it darkened—

Of the girls who came to me and my friends? Which and when?

The wind asked about Umm Salim: Where did she go?

Is it customary for the wind to speak?

Saying, “How good you are! Has the time come for you

After us to become a widow?”

If the wind had answered a questioner,

It would have hinted to me or made itself understood.

My eyesight fails me after sharpness,

And it’s enough of a sickness that you recover and are safe.

Scarcely do the two times of afternoon prayer pass one day and night

If they seek to overtake what they covet.

I heard a voice calling and saw a glimpse

That I almost grasped as the night grew dark.

With a group of youths whose vigor was like

A garment they clothe me with when I stand up.

I found you—the burdens wore you out—

Turning aside your camels to the right and left.

You tasked them, on each woven saddlecloth,

    To tighten its bindings, unbroken.

You pastured them the bitter colocynth from every thorn-plant

Through all of Jumada and Muharram.

    Until their resting-places changed into

    A late summer’s lodging-place, obstructed.

Their milking-place returned as an arid wasteland

    Resembling the dry gulches, demolished.

They waded into the ponds and stirred up

The shallows, except a few that were worn down.

The buck came back, conspicuous in them—

How the heart and skin took on its color!

It takes the sides of the preserve, but cannot

    Reach its middle, advancing.

The visitors brought it, holding it back

With futility between the foreign unintelligible sounds.

So the virgins stood up and clapped

Their palms, too proud to be defiled.

They brought a quilted garment near, which appeared

Plump, when a hyena aims to attack it.

Smooth-cheeked, as if jinn are making music around it,

And the voice of the singer and the echo murmuring.

Without shame, the well-armed virgins brought it,

Prolonging by it the year of new births, magnified.

You’d see it, when you walk behind it, hump-backed,

And bleary-eyed, when you look at it face-on.

Gray, frowning when it walks proud

On sandals, feet spread wide apart.

It pastured on acacias between Zābin and the Khar,

    And the cultivated lowlands, accustomed.

So the young shepherds brought it, who did not appear to be

Youthful shepherds with two looped locks.

When the virgins came to it, they fixed

Into its croup a firm noseband.

So tight, securing the noseband, as if

Their hands had knotted it into its thick neck skin.

When it resisted their rebuke, shaking its neck,

Like the smooth trunk of a palm tree swaying side to side,

Scarcely had it, when she mounted its back, tossed

Its head to throw her down, before it slipped and was caught fast.

Until the straps of its saddle came apart

And the girths were about to split.

It left its mark in the Syrian oak and intended,

    When it recovered, to persist.

So they praised and hailed when they saw it,

Carrying her as an unsteady swing, staggering.

When they examined it behind, how they had stuffed it

With her upon its insecure saddle, askew.

When it settled beneath her, it found for her

No costs but toil and wear itself out.

When the tribe took comfort at dawn’s beauty,

They interpreted the covenant and obscure conversation.

A buck, dusty white speckled with darkness, feared

The sun when the sun was branding.

    They departed, having abandoned every

Profession of theirs, and took up the patterned brocade.

I called out hastily and was overtaken by youth

As the bright stars of Najd rose.

They came with a scrubby camel, which appeared to have

Scars from the milking-buckets, one next to another.

I saw its two boys—the second one weaned—

As scrawny, not having nursed any blood.

For some reason, someone deceived them and obliged them

To take the two nosebands of yellow rope.

And she gave them away in return for hobbles, and hid

Thongs in place of their voices, obscure.

She came resolving to cut their sandals but left

    Only worn-out remains.

You’d think the pebbles show from between

The straps of its shoes, crushed small.

The old she-hyenas passed by it warily and tasked

My two young camels with the hobbling, which they did.

When we caught up to them, no one with a complaint

Or need spoke a word to them.

For a while, they avoided eyes

Out of fear of enemies and caution.

They walked a little and then mounted up, and the virgins

Spread out at us the tents, completely covered.

So we said, “Come, turn aside with us, O Umm Tariq,

And talk aside—that would heal our sickness.”

But she shied away from us into a depression, when

The brocade train trailed from her forearms, rippling.

This passion was stirred up only by a dove

Cooing amorously in the twistings of a wadi.

A turtle-dove the color of leaves cried out at dawn

To a love-sick lover at sunrise, raucously.

When the wind shakes it or plays with it,

It moans over it, swaying and bending.

It vies with the ringdoves of Gilhat

And warbles to “the son of three” between two rods.

It wears a collar unlike any made

By Tamiimah or beaten by a goldsmith’s hands.

The scruffy female built her nest, and it’s her companion

Between rods in a lofty place, conspicuous.

You’d see it dripping, like the quick feathers’

Pipes, a dim light when it stretches its neck to feed.

As if the brightness of delight were on its cheeks

When it extends its neck, to swallow.

So when it grew full feathers and found with her

No place for it in the yard of the nest, cramped,

A preying falcon was let loose, and it left

Of its young only a runt and weaker ones.

It perched on a branch at dawn, leaving

No lamenting mourner in her grief,

Collared, the eloquent ones whose speech rings out

Whenever summer draws near and spring startles.

They competed with the warp-threads of the loom, so she turned back

To meet their blows with a gentle bending.

They came and fulfilled for me no need

    Or accomplished any matter decisively.

They have no messengers for a need

Who travel from distant lands, impoverished.

Don’t you know I’m afflicted? Recall

My trial, when a people's shelter lies demolished!

Does Umm al-Walid echo my voice

When I moan, even if I become hoarse and feeble?

The iron blades laid it bare, so it unleashed

The torrents—there was generosity in its sound.

The virgins fondle it at dawn, and bounce it

With hands in which, you'd see, tattoos are indistinguishable.

    They picked either crimson brocade

    Or imported Chinese silk, sealed.

‘Amir tasted from us on the day of clanging—

Swords, that if brandished by the hand, persist.

On each snarling foretooth you'd see it has

Swords that ambush the sternums, venomous.

Whips discarded by the cowherds, neglected,

That befriend a battered, coarse quirt.

On a giant whose body can scarcely

Stretch its two arms over the poisoned sternums.

Light, darting like a bird, and soft, as if

It's a lamp, when the night grows dark.

Trustworthy, pleasing all people, though different in youth—

Al-Mumarri says, “How long he was cherished!”
