1. Indeed, all tenderness and refinement

    have come together in that wondrous sex.

  2. O you who wrong your wife,

    you are, by God, deplorably wanting in taste!

  3. Vile is he who preys upon a woman—for

    she is only like a ewe, while he is a wolf.

  4. What honor is there for falcons that ravage

    doves, or for a lion that ravages a ward?

  5. And if nature has granted you mastery over

    her body, reason is a formidable sovereign.

  6. Whoever comes to be ruled by a harsh nature

    ends despised by the gentle-natured.

  7. Between the two spouses lies nothing but

    an equal covenantal right that never lapses.

  8. Thus whoever bears the covenant must uphold what

    the covenant enjoins; if he proves false, he fails.
