أنا على ما أنا من الخلق

باق على مذهبي وفي طرقي

I am as I am, created by God

Steadfast in my creed and my ways

أصون عرضي وإن نطقت فذا

بالحق فالحق لي يفي ويقي

I protect my dignity, and if I speak

With truth, truth will defend and protect me

ما لي عدوّ سوى الكذوب فلم

يزل عدوّ الصاحب الصدق

I have no enemy but falsehood, which

Has always been the foe of honesty

لا أكذب اللَه إن لي شيما

تحمي فمي من شوائب الملق

I do not lie to God - I have a nature

That shields my mouth from impurities

فلا كبير سطا عليّ ولا

يد لها منة على عنقي

So no elder has oppressed me, nor has

A hand laden with favors been on my neck

ولا تسابقت في المفاخر بل

سرت الهوينا وفزت بالسبق

And I never competed in boasting, but

Went quietly on my way and won the race

ولا اشتريت الثناء من أحد

بالمال بل بالجهاد والأرق

And I never bought praise from anyone

With money, but with struggle and sleeplessness

ولا تقاعست قط عن طلب

لكنّ دهري عليّ في حنق

And I never shirked seeking, though my fate

Has always been hostile and angry with me

أسقي غروسي فإن أجد ثمرا

أقطف وإلا رضيت بالورق

I water my plants - if I find fruit

I pluck it, if not, I'm content with leaves

والقنع للنفس راحة وغنى

فلا طماعية بلا قلق

Moderation brings the soul rest and riches

No greed, just tranquility for me

هذي العنايا وهنّ بحر شقا

أخوض والناس أوجبوا غرقي

These are my cares, and the sea of anxiety

I navigate while people wish I would drown

إن كان لي حكمة فلي همم

أسعى بها دون كل ذي حمق

If I have wisdom, I have courage to

Pursue it, not like every fool

أقول والقول في فمي لهب

يسطو على الأغبياء بالحرق

I speak, and my words in my mouth are flames

That engulf the ignorant with their heat

قوم يرومون قفل كل فم

لذا يلومون كل ذي نطق

Some people try to lock every mouth

So they blame all who speak out

يباركون انغلاق منفتح

ويلعنون انفتاح منغلق

They bless sealed lips, and curse

Those opened wide

سبرت أخلاقهم فليس لنا

إلا شقيّ يريك وجه تقي

I examined their morals, and found

Only misery smiles at you with the face of piety

يا أيها القاصدون غلق فمي

خبتم فهذا فم بلا غلق

O you who try to seal my mouth

It withered, for this is a mouth beyond sealing

هداي برق وجهلكم سحب

مهلاً فلا برق غير منطلق

My guidance is lightning, your ignorance clouds

Wait! No lightning comes from enclosed clouds

لدولة الحق سطوة قهرت

بالعزم أهل الصفاح والدرق

The state of truth has a power that defeated

The vulgar with determination and firmness

ليخفض الليل رفع رايته

فذاك جيش الضحى على الأفق

Let the night lower its banner

For that is the dawn's army on the horizon

ليل فشا الصبح شهبه وإذا

ذي الشهب بهم كسين بالغسق

A night whose morning rays have scattered

There go the rays, armed with darkness
