  2. حيثما عاينت فيها كل ما

    طاب للأعين أو للأنفس

    Wherever I saw everything

    Pleasant to the eyes or souls

  3. يا أخا الذوق على ذا القوس قف

    وأرسل الطرف إلى كل الجهات

    O brother of taste, stop at this arch

    And send your gaze in all directions

  4. والزم الحذر فكم طرف خطف

    عندما استعلى على ذي الباهرات

    And beware, for how many a gaze was snatched

    When it admired the most splendid

  5. فترى كل جلال لو وصف

    مثل الثابت فوق السائرات

    You may then see all majesty, were it described

    Like the fixed above the moving

  6. كل شيء حير العقل كما

    حارت الأفكار بالملتبس

    Everything confounded the mind, as

    Thoughts were confused by the ambiguous

  7. وأعاد الكف يزجي القلما

    ما لأقلام هنا من أرؤس

    And the palm brought back the pen

    What purpose do pens serve here?

  8. غير رسم النور ما جال هنا

    مصحباً مرأته المستطهرة

    Except to portray the light that shone here

    Accompanied by its immaculate mirror?

  9. إنما المرأة تستجلي لنا

    ورق الغصن وتخفي الثمرة

    For the mirror makes clear to us

    The paper of the branch and hides the fruit

  10. فكساق نحو ظام قدرنا

    حامل الطاسات دون المطرة

    So we walked toward our destined darkness

    Bearing saucers without the rainclouds

  11. يا صحابي يمموا هذا الحمى

    أنتم السارون تحت الحندس

    O my companions, head for this sanctuary

    You who walk under the pillars

  12. تغنموا الصبح وتعطوا علم ما

    كل نطق دونه في خرس

    Seize the morn and give knowledge of what

    Every utterance besides it lacks

  13. إنني قد جئت باريس العلا

    ورأت عيناي ما قد سمعت

    I came to sublime Paris

    And my eyes saw what I had heard

  14. شمت ما لا نظرت عيني ولا

    سمعت أذني ولا روحي وعت

    I smelled what neither my eyes saw

    Nor my ears heard, nor did my soul grasp

  15. آه ما هذي المباني والملا

    هل بروج أم نجوم طلعت

    Ah, what are these buildings and splendors?

    Are they towers or stars that rose?

  16. كل حي أم جماد قد سما

    وبثوب المجد والكبر كسي

    Every neighborhood or inanimate thing ascended

    And donned the garb of glory and greatness

  17. مشهد يسطو على العقل بما

    فيه من آي بها الدهر نسي

    A spectacle that overwhelms the mind with

    Signs the ages forgot

  18. مشهد هيهات يجلي للعيان

    سره ما لم تجل فيه الفكر

    A spectacle that reveals its secret to the eyes in vain

    Unless thoughts were enlightened in it

  19. إنما الظاهر حظ الحيوان

    بينما الباطن حظ للبشر

    For the visible is the lot of beasts

    While the hidden is for humankind

  20. كل شيء لك في ذا الأفق بان

    يقتضي درساً طويلاً وسهر

    Everything in this horizon is manifest to you

    Requiring long study and keeping vigil

  21. فهو من إبداع فكر العظما

    في زمان الغال لا الأندلس

    It is from the creativity of the greatest minds

    In the days of the Gauls, not Andalusia

  22. لو أتى هذا الزمان القدما

    ضرسوا أيديهم بالضرس

    If the ancients came to this age

    They would gnaw their hands in awe

  23. أدار الطرف على هذا الأمد

    وتأمل ذي الدراري الزاهرة

    Turn your gaze upon these shining pearls

    And the pipes like veins that plunge in light to nourish vision

  24. والأنابيب التي مثل الغدد

    تغرز النور لتغذي الباصرة

    And look upon the brilliant comets

    How they glance around bewildered

  25. وانظر الشهب المنيرات الجلد

    كيف ترنو بعيون حائرة

    Darkness was defeated here and retreated

    To the mists of Atlas

  26. غلب الليل هنا فانهزما

    وتوارى في عباب الأطلس

    The sky is the earth here, and the earth the sky

    Marvel at this inversion!

  27. فالسماء الأرض والأرض السما

    ههنا فاعجب لذا المنعكس

    And you see each female idol of love

    Placed while she carries it

  28. وترى كل رداح للغرام

    وضعت وهي عليه تحمل

    A being whose stature is for desire’s sake

    An idol, and her thigh is a temple

  29. ذات قدّ هو للحسن المرام

    صنم والردف منها هيكل

    Where is one like the slender waists

    And breasts like grains of sand?

  30. أين من عنده كالخوط القوام

    وكتل الرمل ردف عبل

    O poet, visit these effigies

    To gain a delightful spirit

  31. أيها الشاعر زر هذي الدمى

    تكتسب منهن طيب النفس

    They are in Paris the quintessence of knowledge

    And for all people, all passions

  32. هن في باريس علم العلما

    ولكل الناس كل الهوس

    Paris would not have appeared in such splendor

    Were it not for the love of gathering and revelry

  33. ما بدت باريس في هذا السنا

    قط لولا حب تجميع النشب

    Adorned with buildings, structures

    Melodies, songs, and joy

  34. زينوها بالمباني والبنا

    والغواني والأغاني والطرب

    So everyone hastened and approached it

    Spending silver and gold on it

  35. فسعى كل إليها ودنا

    ينفق الفضة فيها والذهب

    And for this money it was inclined

    Like an offered maiden, easily obtained

  36. ولذا المال عليها قد همى

    مثل صوب العارض المنبجس

    Neither denying nor feeling ashamed

    Of what it never refused the embrace of a thief
