قد جرحتنا يدُ أيامِنَا

و ليس غيرُ الله مِنْ آس

The days have wounded us,

And none but God can heal.

فلا تُرجِّ الخلقَ في حاجة

ليسوا بأهل لسوى اليأس

Do not beg people for your needs,

They are but hopeless and futile.

و لا تُزدْ شكوىَ إليهم فلا

معنى لشكواك إلى قاس

Do not complain to them, for they are

Deaf to the cries of the anguished.

و لا تقس بالعقل أفْعَالَهمْ

ما مذهب القوم بمنقاس

Do not judge their actions with reason,

For they follow no principles.

و إن تخالط منهمُ معشرا

هويت في الدين على الرأس

If you mix with them,

You will betray your faith.

يأكل بعضهم لحمَ بعض و لا

يَحْسِبُ في الغيبة من بأس

They devour one another's flesh,

Unconcerned with slander's harm.

لا ورعٌ في الدين يحميهمُ

عنها و لا حِشْمَةُ جُلاَّس

No piety protects them

From gossip, nor manners forbid.

لا يعدم الآتي إلى بابِهِمْ

من ذلة الكلب سوى الخاس

None who come to their door

Escape the dog's disgrace but the vile.

فاهرب من الناس إلى ربهمْ

لا خير في الخلطة بالناس

So flee from people to your Lord,

No good comes from mingling with people.
