1. تأوَّبه من همه ما تأوَّبا

    فبات على جمر الأسى متقلبا

    He suffered from worries that made him suffer,

    So he spent the night tossing and turning in the embers of sorrow.

  2. مرت مُزنَ عينيه غداة تحمَّلوا

    عواصفُ ريح الشوق حتى تصيبا

    The morning after eyes heavy with tears,

    As storms of longing blew until striking them.

  3. دموعٌ هتكن الستر عن مضمر الجوى

    وأبدين من سر الهوى ما تغيَّبا

    Tears that uncovered the secret hidden anguish,

    Revealing from the secret of passion what was concealed.

  4. خليلي ما لي كلَّما لاح بارق

    تذكَّرت برقاً بالعقيق وزينبا

    My friend, why is it whenever lightning flashes,

    I'm reminded of lightning at Al-Aqeeq where Zainab lies.

  5. أؤيسُ بالنائين نوماً مشردا

    وأُطمِع بالثاوين قلباً معذبا

    Hopeless with those distant I sleep displaced,

    And hope with those settled a tortured heart.

  6. ومن لي بِرَد الخِبل إذ جدت النوى

    به وبوصل الحبل أن يتقضبا

    Who can mend my robe when resolved is my intent,

    And tie together the rope so it knots again.

  7. أفي كل حين أمتري غَربَ مقلة

    أبي الوجدُ إلا أن تجود فتغربا

    Always must I walk the foreign lands of exile,

    Refusing comfort unless you too are exiled.

  8. إذا عنَّ لي ظبي بوجرة

    شادن تكرتُ من عَنّى الفؤادَ وعذبا

    When a gazelle turned away, ignoring me,

    My heart was tortured and so punished by being ignored.

  9. وارتاح للأرواح من نحو أرضها

    ونثنى عِناني للصبا نفحة الصبا

    And my soul found rest, inclining homeward,

    My reigns slackened by a youthful breeze.

  10. ولولا التهابُ الشوق بين جوانحي

    لأمرعَ خدي بالدموع وأعشبا

    If not for burning longing within my chest,

    My cheek would flow with tears until overgrown.

  11. ألا قاتلَ اللَه الهوى كيف قادني

    إلى مَصرَعي طوعاً وقد كنت مُصعَبا

    Oh how Allah hates passion, leading me

    To my demise willfully though difficult it was.

  12. وما كنت أخشى أن أبيتَ معذبا

    بعذب رُضابِ من حمى الثغرَ أشنبا

    I had not feared I would be tortured

    By the sweet pain from fevered lips that stung.

  13. وخد ألاقي دونَ شم رياضِهِ

    من اللحظِ هِنديّاً وللصدغ عقربا

    And a cheek whose down below inhaling fragrance

    Was Indian, though the cheekbone scorpion-stung.

  14. أجَدَّكَ لم تُبصر تألق بارق

    يجِد نشاطاً في ذُرى الأفق أهدبا

    You seemed not to notice a flashing light

    That brought vitality to the horizon’s curve.
