He cries and laughs, not out of sorrow or joy

Like a lover who penned a line in passion and erased

From the smile of a star he whispered in his poems

And from conversing with a gazelle who yielded

A heart seasoned with pleasures while still a youth

Like a branch that the wind has touched so it opened

Why has the dark-complexioned one turned

Her love away from us? The most beautiful face would not be so stingy

If you knew the sorrow he endured

You would be kinder than one who blamed or forgave

Tomorrow if you waved hopes with a smile

For he who rebelled and he who attacked recklessly

It does not concern me though the tongue of love hails me

Whether the face of fate smiles or frowns

However much the garden blooms, it is a wasteland if deprived

Of a wing that fluttered or a voice that echoed
