Oh poetry, here is a lifetime

And here are joys and memories

Flashes from dawn of youth and its roses

Nourished by a heart and moistened by eyelids

Strutting in its ecstasy beneath them

Is the fresh green youthful branch's warble

Two chicks in a nest meet

    A wing, a beak and a pecker

Stealing a kiss from her smile

Do you know how the sparrow pecks?

And when he lingers sipping it

He taught us how sugar melts

A message from his mouth to hers

Thus abbreviated are messages of passion

Oh Abu al-Khattab, how sweet is passion

You compose from its radiance and scatter

So part of it dreams on its leaves

And part of it scattered on the meadows

You filled the horizon with fragrance, radiance

And visions of revelation, surahs within

    The verdant paradise depicts

    And the chaste wine extracts

    And the immortal melody sings

    And the fleeting parable imagines

    When unrestrained rapture revolves

The dust-laden poet precedes or trails

Soar and do not heed if a resentful one frowns

Or a pretentious one rises for his feast

They blamed the bulbul for what it sheds

Of its feathers though it takes pride in them

Tell me of bliss and its companions

Playing whatever youth and vines will

Was the night of revelry as

You described or imaginations and portraits?

And were "Na'am's" as you portrayed

Or did the portrayer exaggerate in coloring them?

And that “wine skin” - how fragile it is

It nearly disintegrates from its softness

Oh the delights! A player on the right

And on the left, a player and a presser

And here where the fruits dangled

And you never cease playful passion

Scent and kisses and other things

They said Al-Hejaz is barren when they were blind

While in it “Na’am” is a meadow and a stream

If the lute wails the songs of passion

The lute will pine and the strings will be perturbed

And if she claps her hands to the amusement

The valley sways and the trees sing

Passion lies slaughtered at her feet

And beauty in her glances glorifies

The sun bared itself before her cheek

It would split in two if it knew where the moon was

The red grapes spilled over her lips

    What are the yellow pomegranates?!

And the white rose, nay, her breast

    As if from coquetry, intoxicated

Of the peach at its peak a red

"Ram" or the head of a blonde angel

Carried by an affectionate blonde breast

Tickled by a passionate brother his

    Tongue stretched out dripping honey

Gently Abu al-Khattab you surpassed wishes

Do you see a braided crown on the horizon?

Look down from the summit, at its base

How many wings of birds are broken

Three things I lived for and lived high

Passion, then poetry, then the pulpit

Without you and the poetry you created

Na'am and the night of revelry would be naught but traces

Without "Jamil" "Buthaina" would not be

And Abla would not be without Antar

Beauty without poetry would be but a flower

Toying with it a glance or two

But if tenderness from a poet

Or a falling teardrop attains it

The blood of eternity flows in its leaves

And the moon sleeps beneath its feet

So wonder at one with beauty shunning a poet

Tormented by immortalizing it and repulsed

Poetry is God's spirit in a poet

One inspires it and the other disseminates

Its nourishment is morals in their buds

And its water the purest modesty

    Sublime wisdom among its names

And Eden among its homelands and fragrance

It has over horizons a flowering conquest

And in the water's surf an even more flowering one

    A defiant imagination drives them

    The undefeated father of conquests

    Knowledge clings to its causes

So the towering mountains said and boulders

Had poetry done it justice after you unleashed it

In streams from which sparks glare

    Dreams would row its tablets

And magic disrobes itself before them

Had poetry done justice you would be

A sweetened kiss in its mouth, Omar

Or had “Na’am” done justice after you presented her

As the greatest temptation, an exemplar

In a poetic innovation none dreamed of

    Not "Qais" nor "Kuthayyir's" elegy

It was passed from plateau to plateau

    And handed down by eras

Had she done justice she would've bared her chest

    Wishing those lines be stamped

    And clapped for “Omar” saying

With my dark eyes this brown one
