Following the alliance they found

والحرب على النمسا شهروا

فذكت واشتدَّ لها وقدُ

And war on Austria they declared

So it ignited, the wick intensified

واجتازوا حدّ الايسنزو

بعزائم ليس لها حدُّ

And they crossed the Isonzo

With determination that knows no limit

بكتائب فوق بيارقها

كتبت النصر أو اللحد

With battalions whose banners

Wrote of victory or the grave

كالسيل أنصبت جارفةً

وطمت لا يوقفها سدُّ

Like a flood they poured forth

Crashing, no dam can stop their tide

وتنزت تبغي آطاماً

يتهيبُ جانبها الاسدُ

Seeking to conquer heights

Where even lions dread to tread

وغدت تتوقلُ في قننٍ

ما بعد تعاليها بعدُ

Moving through canyons

Beyond which no peaks rise higher

عنها ينصاعُ الفكرُ عياً

والطرف كليلاً يرتدُّ

Before them, thought staggers blind

And eyes draw back in defeat

لو حلق نسرٌ يقصدها

لارتدّ وأعجزه القصدُ

If an eagle flew to meet them

It would turn back, its quest failed

فيها المتنِصت يسمع حو

ل العرش ملائكهُ تشدو

Therein the eavesdropper hears the angels

Around the throne singing praises loud

والراصدُ للافلاك بلا

منظارٍ يمكنهُ الرصدُ

And the naked-eyed watcher of the cosmos

Finds observation beyond his grasp

هذي لتسوُّرها الايطا

ليون عزائمهم شدُّوا

The Italians girded themselves for the ascent

Their resolve intensified

فرأوا قدام طلائعهم

عقبات أسهلها نجدُ

Yet before their vanguards

They saw obstacles, the least being harsh

وجيوش النمسا زادتها

تحصيناص ليس لهُ ندُّ

And the Austrian troops fortified

With defenses that know no match

فيكون مهاجمُها هدَفاً

لمخاطرَ أيسرها الصدُّ

Thus their assailant becomes target

For perils, the least being rebuffed

لمدافعَ تقذف من فمها

برقاً يتخللهُ رعدُ

By cannons spewing lightning

With thunder in their midst

وسيول قنابل ان لطمت

طوداً يندكُّ وينقدُّ

And torrents of shells, that if cast

Against a mountain, would shake and shred it

وركام الثلح تحيط بها

كالجيد يطوقهُ العقدُ

And banks of snow surround them

Like a necklace circling a bride

ورياحُ جليد حاصبةٌ

بَرَداً كرصاص يعتدُّ

And biting winds of ice

A cold like lead balls intensified

هذي إِن ينجُ مهاجمها

من نارٍ يهرأهُ البرد

If their assailant survives the flames

That the frost makes merciless

اما الايطاليون فما

رهبوا الأخطار ولا ارتدُّوا

The Italians neither feared the dangers

Nor drew back in retreat

واذ اقتحمت ابطالهم ال

أطواد قواعدها هدُّوا

And when their heroes breached

The mountain bases and cast them down

وعليها استولوا لم يدفع

عنها التحصين ولا الجندُ

And seized them, neither fortification

Nor soldiers could defend against their tide

ولسوف تظل بسالتهم

أثراً يحتاط به المجدُ

And forevermore their valor

Will remain, guarded in glory's trove

وبها يبقى ذكر الايطا

ليين يفوح لهُ ندُّ

And thereby the Italians' name

Will endure, its fragrance intensified
