حتى متى تجف القلوب وتخفقُ

والى مَ تضطرب النفوس وتقلقُ

How long will hearts be dry and flutter?

How long will souls be restless and disturbed?

والخلق طراً في شقاءٍ شاملٍ

وبودهم لو أنهم لم يخلقوا

While all people are miserable

And wish they were never created

سئموا اقتراناً بالحياة أمضهم

ولو انهم منحوا الخيار لطلقوا

They are tired of life itself

And if given the choice, they would divorce it

طمعوا بأن يلقوا أقلَّ مسوغ

في هذه الدنيا البقاءَ فما لقوا

They hoped to find the slightest justification

To remain in this world, but found none

والحرب فيها لا تني مشبوبة

وسعيرها يشوي الانام ويحرق

War in it does not cease raging

And its flames burn people and ignite

المالَ تُفني والرجال تبيدهم

ودماءهم هدراً تثجُّ وتهرق

It destroys wealth and kills men

Their blood gushing and pouring

بقذائف البارودِ تنثر هامهم

وجسومهم بظبى الاسنة تعرق

With gunpowder shells their skulls are scattered

And their bodies sweat from the heat of flames

قلب الحديد يذوب من اهوالها

ويشيب من رأس الوليد المفرق

The iron heart melts from its horrors

And the hair of the youth becomes white

عمَّت رزاياها البرايا كلهم

كالسيل يجرف ما أصابَ ويغرقُ

Its calamities have overwhelmed all the lands

Like a flood that wrecks all it hits and drowns

من قبلها شبت حروبٌ جَمة

والغرب ضجَّ لهولها والمشرقُ

Before it, other severe wars erupted

And the West roared from their intensity, and the East

لكنها في جنب هذي لم تكن

شيئاً به الذكرى تليقُ وتلبقُ

But compared to this one, they were

Unworthy of mention or relevance

تلك الحروبُ على اشتداد سمومها

كانت لدى هذي بليلاً تنشقُ

As violent as those wars were

They were trivial compared to this

وسلاحها رمحٌ يحُدَّد نصلهُ

ومهندٌ ينضى وسهم يرشقُ

Their weapons were spears, sharpened blades

Bows flexing and arrows flying

ومع الرصاص البندقي استنبطت

أُكرُ الحديد من المدافع تطلقُ

With gunpowder the iron cannons were invented

Firing bullets that flew and pierced

هذي هي العُدَد التي كانت بها

من قبلُ ناصية المعارق تمشقُ

That was the weaponry that adorned

The battlefields in times past

وزمانها اذ ذاك مثلُ مجالها

مهما يطل ويسع قصيرٌ ضيقُ

And their era, at that time, matched their range

However far it reached, still short and narrow

وعلى فداحة ما جنت فخطوبها

سلعٌ باسواق التحمل تنفقُ

And despite the enormity of the evils they committed

They were commodities sold in the markets of endurance

لكنما هذي الكريهة شرها

سيل على كل الورى يتدفقُ

But this abhorrent one, its evil

Is a torrent flooding all of existence

ومثيرها غليوم لا يرثي لمن

في غمرها غرقوا ولا يترفق

And its stirrer has no mercy for those

Who drowned in its flood without gentleness

ورجالهُ كلٌّ يسير على هوى

مولاه شيطان الوغى لا يشفقُ

Its men all march according to the desires

Of their demon lord of turmoil without kindness

أذكى شرارتها وأمَّل أنهُ

فيها على الحلفاء نصراً يُرزقُ

He ignited its embers and hoped

Through it to gain victory over the Allies

ومضى عليه الف يومٍ وهو من

دَمِ شعبه فيها يعبُّ وينفق

A thousand days have passed while he

Sheds and wastes the blood of his people in it

ما زال يُحضئهُا ويضرمُ نارها

ويطيش من كرّ الحبوط وينزق

He still encourages it and fuels its flames

Recklessly charging like a crazed camel

ويواصل الحرب التي الحلفا سعوا

في منعها قبل الشبوب فأخفقوا

And continues the war that the Allies have tried

To prevent before it raged but failed

ويجدُّ في توسيع شقتها ولا

ينفك منها يحتويهِ مأزقُ

He insists on expanding its misery while no

Impasse can restrain him from it

لم يرعَ فيها قط حرمة شرعة

وعن المحارم لم يذدهُ موثق

He never respected any sanctity of law

Nor was deterred by any covenant

بل هبَّ ينتهك الشرائع كلها

ويجزُّ لباتِ العهود ويخرقُ

Rather he violated all morals

And considered treaties permitted to breach

فأباح تخريب الكنائس مرسلاً

في أنفس الآثار سهماً يمرقُ

He allowed the destruction of churches by sending

Arrows through priceless relics to pierce

وأحلَّ قتل الأبريا بقذائفٍ

سفن الهوا ترمي بها وتحلقُ

And permitted the killing of innocents with shells

That planes release as they fly and soar

ولأنتِ يالوفان أ صدق شاهدٍ

بفظائع الالمان جهراً ينطقُ

Oh ships of the air! You are the most truthful witness

Publicly speaking of the Germans' atrocities

كم غارة شنت على باريس بل

كم من جراها أهل لندن أُقلقوا

How many raids did they launch on Paris?

How many in London were alarmed by them?

بل كم قتيلاً فيهما وسواهما

قتلت وليس به غبارٌ يلصق

How many were killed by them in both cities and beyond?

Killed without justification to attach

ذا بعض ما اجترحته طياراتهُ

والى بيان الكل لا أتطرقُ

This is some of what their planes have committed

I will not delve into detailing it all

لكنما حوت الفظائع لم يزل

يشكو الصدى وفؤاده يتحرق

But the atrocities contain what still

Echoes, with hearts burning in anguish

فرمى بغواصاته حتى غدا

حلق المحيط بها يغص ويشرق

He sent his submarines until

The ocean's throat choked and lit up

وتسابقت تجري أوامر ربها

وتجد في تنفيذها وتدقق

Racing to carry out their lord's commands

Scrupulously executing and excelling

ولها بإِغراق السفين وركبها

تفويضهُ من كل قيد مطلقُ

With authority from all restraints released

To sink ships and all aboard them without delay

فاتت جرائم سجَّلت فيها على

المانيا عاراً به تتمنطقُ

The crimes recorded against Germany through them

Are a disgrace that adorns and fits them

وأقامت الدنيا عليها وهي لا

تنفك ركب المنشئات تغرقُ

They have indicted the world while continuously

Sinking vessels and fleets without relent

وحكومة الدكتور ولسن هالها

هذا البلاءُ المستطير الموبق

These acts astounded President Wilson

With this growing, dreadful calamity

وعلى التلافي حضَّت الالمان وال

إنذار يرعد بالوعيد ويبرق

He warned the Germans without

Threats of vengeance thundering and lightning

لكنهم لم يأبهوا لوعيدها

وعلى التمادي في جرائرهم بقوا

But they did not heed his warning

And persisted in their crimes and stayed

سخروا بصولتها وعدُّوا شهرها

للحرب هبهُ اذيع لا يتحقق

They ridiculed his threats and considered

His declaration of war untrue

وغرامها بالسلم يوصد دونها

باب الجنوح الى الكفاح ويغلق

And lured their allies who raced

To imitate them immediately

وإذا أرادَت أن تمد بجيشها ال

حلفا الذين لها عَنوا وتملقوا

Together they softened towards sins

Facilitating the committing of major ones

فجنودها في كل شهرٍ عدُّهم

مهما تزده ففرقة أو فيلقُ

They set up gallows for innocent lives though deserving

To be chained like criminals and hanged

ولهم بعرض البحر غواصاتهم

فتصدها عن قصدها وتعوّق

They innovated abominations, unleashing poison

Gases that burn and liquids that strangle

هذي الأقاويل التي الالمان في

ما بينهم هذروا بها وتشدقوا

They used tools for murder and torture

To achieve their purposes completely

واستدرجوا حلفاءَهم فتسابقوا

وبهم على الفور اقتدوا وتخلقوا

As for the machines that do not inflict harm

They name them what cannot be endured or borne

والى اقتراف المنكرات جميعهم

خفُّوا واتيان الكبائر نسَّقوا

And they have varieties of evils that afflict

Gathering cups of torment and overflow

نصبوا مشانق أبرياءَ وحقهم

أن يوثقوا هم كالجناة ويُشنقوا

Inflicting bereavement, orphanhood, and throwing

Souls into chasms of misery to expire

وتفننوا في الموبقات فأطلقوا أل

غازات تحرق والسوائل تخنق

They ridiculed America and belittled the strength

Of its army, not fearing its mighty grip

واستخدموا للقتل والتعذيب آ

لاتٍ بها أغراضهم تتحقق

So it was provoked to war, proving

Its threats were true while they disbelieved

أما الألى لا يوردون بها الردى

فتسومهم ما لا يطاق وترهق

It called its sons who rushed

Each racing the other to volunteer

ولهم بأصناف الرزايا تبتلي

وتجمُّ كاسات العذاب وتدهقُ

Ninety million stood in loyalty and not

One shirked or abandoned the cause

وتذيقهم ثكلاً وتيتيماً وتر

ميلاً تجاح به النفوس وتزهقُ

They cried in one voice "We obey!"

Like clouds thundering under the leadership

بأميركا هزأوا وقوة جيشها

حقروا وشدةَ بأسها لم يتقوا

Of President Wilson they placed

Their money, minds, and blood without grasping

فتحفزت للحرب تُثبت أنها

بوعيدها صدقت وهم لم يصدقوا

They rose to prepare with the resolve of a nation

That persisted and succeeded, the most resolute

واستصرخت ابناءَها فتراكضوا

كلٌّ اخاه الى التطوع يسبق

In peace and war they astonished the world

With their integrity,rising above

تسعون مليوناً بها بروا ولم

يك واحد منهم يعقُّ يأبق

In peace they observed neutrality

Moving precisely upon its ways

صرخوا بصوتٍ واحدٍ لبيَّكِ يا

أمَّ الرجال وكالسحاب تبعقوا

They stopped the warmongers though if

They found means of accord, they would reconcile

وعلى مشيئتها ورهن رئيسها ال

دكتور ولسن كل شيءٍ علقوا

They did not support any of them and were equal

To them all, not distinguishing or dividing

أموالهم وعقولهم ودماءَهم

وقفوا على سعة ولم يتضيقوا

Their goodwill covered both sides

Flowing generously like rain

نهضوا للاستعداد نهضة امة

جدَّت ففازت والاجدُّ الاسبق

Their societies cared for the wounded

Their breezes fragrant in every region

في حالتي سلم وحربٍ أدهشوا ال

دنيا بما فيه سموا وتفوَّقوا

And they extended to those harmed by this war

The palms of their generosity in charity

في السلم راعوا ما اقتضاه مقامهم

فجروَا على سنن الحياد ودققوا

Ask about their immense achievements in our East

That speaks of them, as Europe speaks

وقفوا امام بني الوغى ولو أنهم

ظفروا بأسباب الوفاق لوفقوا

They have an engaging story in France

With its echo in Belgium more compelling

وتجنبوهم لم يحابوا واحداً

منهم وسووا بينهم لم يفرقوا

They observed neutrality, increasing their profits, and because of it

No hypocrite among them remained

شملوا فريقيهم بإِحساناتهم

كالغيث من كرمائهم تتدفق

But they were not content to prosper

While misery blanketed the innocent

وتعهدوا الجرحى بجمعياتهم

نسماتها في كل صقع تعبق

And the atrocities of the Germans each

Day had another to add to the first

وعلى الألى نكبوا بهذي الحرب قد

بسطوا اكف سخائهم وتصدقوا

And so they rejected neutrality and denied

Its profits, determining to shun the abhorred

سل عن مآثرها العظيمة شرقنا

ينطق ومنه بها أوربا أنطق

In peace they could not restrain the evil

The Germans deliberately unleashed

فلها حديثٌ في فرنسا شائق

وصداه في البلجيك منه اشوق

So they pretended to take up arms

To shackle the enemy and restrain

لزموا الحياد فزادهم ربحاً ومن

جرائه لم يبق فيهم مُملق

For war is the greatest deterrent of war

As its flames burn the provocateur and scorch

لكنه لم يُرضهم ان ينعموا

والبؤس عمَّ عَلى البرية يطبق

In peace they cared for both worlds with abundant

Aid flowing to the peaceful from springs

وفظائع الالمان يسبق بعضها

بعضاً لها في كل يوم ملحق

And in war they awed the world by

Rising to it, resolute and climbing high

ولذاك ما نبذوا الحياد وانكروا

أرباحه وعلى الكريهة أطبقوا

With determination that melts iron and zeal

Penetrating, obstacles burst open

في السلم لم يتمكنوا أن يحبسوا

شراً له الالمان عمداً أطلقوا

Only a month passed before their preparations

Tightened the noose on their enemies

فتذرعوا بالحرب يتخذونها

وهقاً يُغَلُّ به العدو ويوثق

Hundreds of thousands of them crossed the ocean

Like lightning bolts landing and striking

والحرب اكبر وازع للحرب إِذ

بسعيرها يكوى المثير ويحرق

They did not care for the threats of their submarines

But transcended their dangers and flowed

في السلم راعوا العالمين بما على ال

عافين من بدر المعونة أغدقوا

They crossed the tumult as though walking on

Dry land, supported by security's shield

والحرب فيها أدهشوا الدنيا بأن

نهضوا لها وتوقلوا وتسلقوا

There they filled the ships which sailed

The armored among them watching and aiming

بعزيمةٍ تفري الحديد وهمةٍ

نفَّاذةٍ هام المصاعب تفلق

As if a massive extended bridge

Over the sea, or suspended above it

لم ينصرمعامٌ على استعدادهم

الا الخناقَ على الاعادي ضيقوا

This is the nation that the Germans derided

And despite forbearance provoked

وعليهم انقضَّت مئات الوفهم

عبر المحيط كما الصواعق تصعق

They will face immediate punishment

Collapsing on them like destiny and enveloping

لم يعبأُوا بوعيد غوَّاصاتهم

بل جاوزوا اخطارها وتدفقوا

Collapsing, and then their thousands

Will collapse and their ranks unravel

عبروا الخضم كانهم ساروا على

يبس لهم عضدُ الامان مطوق

Their souls will melt in the heat of torment

And from rage, teeth will grind and burn

فيهِ استقلوا الباخرات فابحرت

والدارعات بها تحف وتحدق

وكأنها جسر كبير ممتطٍ

لليمّ او هو فوقهُ متعلق

هذا هو الشعب الذي البوش ازدروا

وله على رغم التجلد أحنقوا

ولسوف يلقون العقاب معجَّلاً

يهوي عليهم كالقضاءِ ويطبق

يهوي وعندئذ الوف الوفهم

تهوي وشمل صفوفهم يتمزقُ

ونفوسهم بلظى العذاب تذوب وال

أسنانُ من حنق تصرُّ وتحرقُ
