1. لبيكَ يا وطني دعوتَ سميعا

    ولئن أمرتَ فقد أمرت مطيعا

    I respond to your call, my homeland, having heard,

    And though you command, you have commanded one obedient.

  2. هذا شعارُ بنيك فيكَ وكلهم

    فحواه ينشرُ حيث حلَّ مُذيعا

    This is the motto of your children in you, all of them,

    Whose meaning it spreads wherever a broadcaster settled.

  3. كلٌّ على حدةٍ يكرر قولهم

    هذا وفيه يعملون جميعا

    Each separately repeats their words,

    This they work on altogether.

  4. حاشى لهم وهم أبر بني الورى

    ان يطمئنوا أن أبوهم ريعا

    Blessed are they, and they are more dutiful of mankind’s children,

    To be reassured that their father is agreeable.

  5. وأُعيذهم أن يذكروك ولا ارى

    فلذات اكبدهم تذوب نزوعا

    And I protect them from remembering you and not seeing

    The apples of their eyes melting away in yearning.

  6. ذكراك ملءُ شفاههم وقلوبهم

    لا يفرغون لغيرها موضوعا

    Remembering you fills their mouths and hearts,

    Not emptying for anything else as a subject.

  7. تبتزُّ من جنب المناعم راحةً

    وتسلُّ من جفن النؤوم هجوعا

    It snatches rest from the side of the delicate,

    And drags sleep from the eyelid of the wakeful.

  8. ذكراك تقصينا عن الدنيا ولا

    نبغي اليها في سواك رجُوعا

    Remembering you we avoided the life, and do not

    Want to return to it in anything other than you.

  9. ذكراك تذكي في الجوانح لوعةً

    وتشُبُّ ما بين الضلوع ولوعا

    Remembering you kindles yearning in the hearts,

    And flames what is between the ribs - and what a flame!

  10. شوقاً وتحناناً اليك كلاهما

    يهتاج فينا بالاسى متبوعا

    Yearning and affection for you both

    Stir in us with the sorrow - followed.

  11. شوقاً وتحناناً الى شيخٍ به

    نَعنيك يا جبلاً أشم منيعا

    Yearning and affection for a sheikh in whom

    We mean you, O mountain high and staunch.

  12. لبنان طودك صرحِ عزٍّ رَوقهُ

    يزداد رغمَ مُقاوميك متوعا

    Lebanon your mountain, a palace of glory raised,

    Increasing despite your opponents, exalted.

  13. وبنوك اقمار الهدى أنى انتحت

    يترقب الساري لهنَّ طلوعا

    And your children the guiding moons, wherever they appear,

    The banner waits for their rising.

  14. وعلى الإِقامة في أعز مراتع ال

    دُّنيا نفضلُ في حماك رتوعا

    And we prefer dwelling in the most honored meadows of

    The world, so in your protection we repose.

  15. لبنانَ من لي ان أراك فيشتفي

    قلبٌ غدا بلظى النوى ملذوعا

    Lebanon who can I see to heal

    A heart that the heat of affliction has inflamed?

  16. لبنان تيمني هواك وسامني

    في بعدك التبريح والتلويعا

    Lebanon your love has prospered me, and made me

    Happy in your absence, dispirited and discomposed.

  17. أُرضعتهُ طفلاً واني لم أزل

    فيه على رغم المشيب رضيعا

    I nursed it as a child, and have not yet ceased

    To be in it, despite my gray hair, a suckling babe.

  18. واظلُّ منك مدى حياتي عاشقاً

    حُسناً تبارك مَن براه بديعا

    And I remain your lover for the length of my life,

    Beauty - blessed is He who created it flawless!

  19. حُسناً اراه فيك مطبوعاً وفي

    ما دون وجهك زخرفاً مصنوعا

    Beauty I see it inherent in you, and in

    Other than your essence, it is ornament manufactured.

  20. وعلى الشعور به طبعتُ فقل لمن

    لم يدرهِ سَل شاعراً مطبوعا

    And by feeling it I was stamped, so ask whoever

    Knew it not, ask a stamped poet.

  21. في غير لبنان الحياة ربيعها

    يمضي بفصل خريفها مشفوعا

    In other than Lebanon its spring

    Passes with its autumn concatenated.

  22. لكنها فيه شبابٌ دائمٌ

    وفصولها ابداً تظلّ ربيعا

    But in it is perpetual youth,

    And its seasons forever remain spring.

  23. يا أيها الجبل الذي يرضى الردى

    عزاً ويأبى في الحياةِ خنوعا

    O mountain that is pleased with steadfastness though fate decays,

    And refuses in life to submit.

  24. اني أُطلُّ عليكَ يا لبنان من

    جوّ التصوُّر ناظراً وسميعا

    I look upon you, O Lebanon, from

    The atmosphere of imagination, seeing and hearing.

  25. فأرى فيك ما أهوالهُ

    تلقي على الصخر الاصم صدوعا

    So I see in you - what horrors

    Cast upon the deaf rock splitting.

  26. أجد الشقاءَ على الديار مخيماً

    واليأسَ في عرصاتها مزروعا

    I find misery over the dwellings looming,

    And despair in its yards sown.

  27. والضنك يوهي الاقوياء فتفتك ال

    أمراض فتكاً بالضعاف ذريعا

    And hardship enfeebles the strong, so the

    Diseases decimate the weak violently.

  28. والجوعُ خلف الداءِ مكمنهُ فمن

    لم تردِهِ الأدواءُ يقضي جوعا

    And behind the disease hunger lurks in ambush, so whoever

    Disease did not destroy, hunger kills.

  29. وكلاهما قتلاهُ يا أسفي على

    قتلاهُ يعيي عدهم مجموعا

    Both are murders - woe is me for their

    Murders, enumerating their number wearies.

  30. ذا بعض ما عيني تراهُ وكلهُ

    تلقاهُ أفظعَ ما تراهُ فظيعا

    This is some of what my eye sees, and all of it

    Is the most dreadful that the dreadful sees.

  31. متصاعدٌ من كل فجٍّ حاملٌ

    شكوى يرجعها الصدى ترجيعا

    Ascending from every crevasse, bearing

    A complaint its echo returns reiterating.

  32. شكوى ألوفٍ فيكَ موردها الردى

    إن لم يُغثها المنقذون سريعا

    The complaint of thousands has in you its wellspring - if

    The rescuers do not aid swiftly.

  33. شكوى تعي الأنات والزفرات وال

    حسرات والتعذيبَ والترويعا

    A complaint that stirs sighs, groans, regrets and

    Frightening - and torment.

  34. أناتِ مرضى ينزعون ضنىً ولا

    يجدون طباً يبرئُ الموجوعا

    Sighs of patients who suffer stingily, finding no

    Cure to heal the wounded.

  35. أنات من يتضورون ولا يروَ

    ن لحرَّ ما يشكون منه نقوعا

    Groans of those who writhe, seeing not

    To relieve what they complain of, saturated.

  36. وتنهدات الامهات يزيدها ال

    أيتام والمترملات شيوعا

    And the laments of mothers, increased by

    The orphans and widows proliferation.

  37. يبكين أبناءً وآباءً وأز

    واجاً ويذرفن الدموعَ نجيعا

    They weep for children, fathers, and

    Husbands, and they copiously shed tears.

  38. أما الزفير ففي حشاكَ يئزُّ يَا

    شيخ الرُّبى ويحزُّ منك ضلوعا

    As for groaning, it seethes in your breast, O

    Sheikh of meadows, and splits your ribs

  39. حنقاً على من ضايقوك فاحرجوا

    بالظلم صدراً منك كان وسيعاً

    Resenting those who troubled you, so constrained

    A chest that had been capacious.

  40. نكثوا العهودَ وقيدوك وما رعَوا

    بوثيقة أستقلالك التوقيعا

    They broke covenants and bound you, nor heeded

    The document of your independence by signing.

  41. وضعوك وهي خليقة الظلام ان

    يضعوا الرفيع ويرفعوا الموضوعا

    They reduced you - and it befits the darkness to

    Reduce the lofty and raise up the lowly.

  42. وعلى الخضوع لهم قسرت وكنت لا

    تختارُ الاَّ للاله خضوعا

    And to submit to them you were forced, while you chose not

    Except to God alone to submit.

  43. وعلى ربوعك والحدائق سلطوا ال

    إزهاق والتدمير والتقليعا

    And upon your meadows and gardens they unleashed

    Devastation, destruction, and ravaging.

  44. والدور أخلوها وكنَّ أو اهلاً

    والروض أذوَوه وكان مريعا

    The houses they emptied though they were homes,

    And the gardens they spoiled though they were lush.

  45. وأتوا فظائع تقشعرُّ لهولها ال

    دنيا ويضطرب الجمادُ هلوعا

    And they came with atrocities that horrify the

    World for their horror, and the inanimate trembles terrified.

  46. أفبعد هذا كله يصفو لنا

    عيشٌ وقلبك مفعم تفجيعا

    After all this, does life become easy for us,

    While your heart brims over with agony?

  47. أم هل تلين لنا بمصر مضاجعٌ

    ونراكَ للنوب الشداد ضجيعا

    Or do beds soften for us while we see you

    To the ferocious vicissitudes recumbent?

  48. كلا وليس لنا الشراب بسائغٍ

    أبداً ونأبى للطعام نجوعا

    No! The drink is not ever sweet for us,

    And we refuse food - we do not hunger.

  49. إِلاَّ إِذا الظلماتُ عنك تقشعت

    ووردتَ من بعد الاوام نقيعا

    Except when the darkness over you disperses,

    And you return after hopelessness limpid.

  50. فينال حينئذ بنوك مرادهم

    ويكفكفون من العيون دموعا

    Then your children attain what they desire,

    And they stem from their eyes the tears.

  51. ويرون فيك لواءَ عزك مثلما

    عهدوه قبلاً خافقاً مرفوعا

    And they see the banner of your glory in you waving

    As they were used to it before - lifted.

  52. واللهَ ندعو ان يكون لسؤلنا

    هذا مجيباً للدعاء سميعا

    And God we call upon to be

    Responding to this prayer of ours - Hearing.
