دارت رحى الحرب في الدنيا على عجل

تجرع الناس صاب اليتم والثكلِ

The mill of war turned quickly in the world

People tasted the bitterness of orphanhood and bereavement

لم يخل في الارض منها موضع فُبلي

بشرها الغرب حتى الشرق غير خلي

There was no place on earth left unscathed

The West brought it all the way to the East, nothing was spared

أضحى ومن هولها أهلوهُ في شُغلُ

وفي العراق لظاها شبَّ والتهبا

Its horror made people busy themselves with it

And in Iraq it raged and flared up

وسام من في العراق الويل والحربا

وكان أنور في إيقادها السببا

And Iraq was laden with woe and war

And Anwer was the cause of igniting it

لانهِ ظلّ عن نهج الهدى وأبى

الا ركوب الهوى والغيّ والخطل

For he deviated from the path of guidance and refused

Except pursuing desire, sin, and wrongdoing

لم يجدِ نصحٌ ولا عدٌ أفاد ولم

يخف وعيداً ولم يحفل برعي ذمَم

He found no advice or deterrent of use and paid no heed

To threats or cared for protecting reputations

والحرب في جانب الالمان كان عزم

فزجّ دولته في نارها وفَصَم

And the Germans were intent upon waging war

So he plunged his state into its fire severed

عُرى مودتها مع أعظم الدول

على بريطانيا العظمى الكنود عدا

The ties of friendship with the greatest of states

Britain the mighty, evilly betrayed and spurned

وفضلها وهو بادٍ كالضُّحى جحدا

وظل ينزع حتى اغضب الاسدا

And persisted in provocation until he angered the lion

Who became enraged and the air shook with his roaring

فهاج والجو من تزآره ارتعدا

ومادت الارض وارتجت من الوجل

The earth quaked and trembled in awe

The army of the Queen of the Seas marched on Iraq

وجيش سلطانة البحر العراقَ نحا

والبصرة احتلها والقرنة افتتحا

And occupied Basra and took Al Qurna

At the meeting of the two rivers it swept through

وملتقى الرافدين اجتاز مكتسحا

امامه ساقة الاتراك فانفسحا

The Ottoman troops retreated before it

It advanced over plain and hill

لهُ التقدم فوق السهل والجبل

على الفرات توالى زحفه صُعُدا

Along the Euphrates its march continued

Until Al Nasiriya surrendered to its demand

والناصرية منها نال ما قصدا

وفوق دجلة للتدويخ مد يدا

And on the Tigris it stretched out its hand

In Amara it began and from that moment

وفي عمارةَ تنزند ابتدا فغدا

من ذلك الحين يكنى عنه بالبطل

It was known as the hero

General Nixon attacked headlong

عليه نكسن أملى كُرَّ مقتحما

وازحف شمالاً وغامر واغزُ مغتنما

And marched northward venturing and conquering

Townshend asked him, "We have been told before

أجاب ل فلقد قالوا لنا قِدما

ليس المخاطر محموداً ولو سلما

Recklessness, even if successful, is not praiseworthy"

Shall I contradict this saying by my actions?"

فهل أخالف هذا القول بالعمل

فقال نكسن خالفهُ ودع حذرا

Nixon replied, "Disregard this warning

That makes you shy from attaining glory

يثنيك إيجاسهُ عن نيلك الوطرا

واعمل بموجب قولٍ صدقه ظهرا

One cannot achieve greatness without risk

Be determined, attack, win, fight - you will attain"

لن يبلغ المجد من لم يركب الخطرا

فاعزم وأقدم تفز واهجم وصل تنلِ

Townshend obeyed the order though the general

Urged him on beyond his own intentions

أطاع تنزند أمراً فاه قائدهُ

بهِ وأقدم تحدوه مقاصدهُ

He crossed the Tigris until he tamed its torrents

And was vigorous in conquest and defeat

وراض دجلة حتى ذلَّ ماردهُ

واشتدّ في الفتح والتدويخ ساعدهُ

Spending the night where he set an example

After this rapid advance, he did not hesitate

وبات في ما أتاهُ مضرب المثل

بعد الثنيات لم تبطئ وقد وهنت

Until he subdued Kut Al Amara and bent it

Both gained him wide renown

كوتُ الأمارة أن دانت له وعنت

كلتاهما أكسبتهُ شهرة علنت

And were thereafter linked to the memory of his conquest

Filling ears, mouths, and pens

وأصبحت وبذكرى فتحه اقترنت

ملءَ المسامعِ والافواه والمقل

His army had suffered and did not increase

And his efforts to compensate this loss were fruitless

وجيشهُ كان قد أكرى ولم يزدِ

وسعيهُ في تلافي النقص لم يفدِ

When he saw he needed reinforcements

And was short of completing his desired numbers

رآهُ اذ ذاكَ محتاجاً الى المددِ

وغير مستكملٍ ما شاءَ من عددِ

And unable to remedy this deficiency

Yet despite all this he was active

وليس في وسُعِه اصلاح ذا الخلل

لكنهُ مع هذا كلِه نشطا

In continuing to defeat however disheartened

He descended on Ctesiphon like fate itself

الى مواصلةِ التدويخ ما قنطا

على مدائن كسرى كالقضا هبطا

Conquered it and took its outskirts and center

Capturing its troops like tame camels

وأحتلها مالكاً أرباضها وسطا

وأستاق أجنادها كالأينق الذلل

At Ctesiphon, intent on advancing to Baghdad

He was attacked by Nureddin who assaulted

وفي مدائن كسرى وهو قد عزما

على التقدم للزوراءِ مقتحما

Forcing him to retreat, withdrawing

To fight defensively using ruses

اذا على الفوز نور الدين قد هجما

عليهِ فاضطر أن يرتد ملتزما

But Nureddin's troops were merciless in their advance

Rushing recklessly onward, outpacing

نهج الدفاع وأخذ الخصم بالحيل

لكن عسكر نور الدين ما رفقا

And storming Townshend overflowing

On his flanks like pouring rain

في زحفهِ بل جرى في سيره عنقا

وواصل الكرّ والاقدام واستبقا

Townshend knew the state of his troops

And had no worry or secret warning

الى الهجوم على تنزند مندفقا

على جوانبهِ كالعارض الهطل

So found no alternative but to retreat

Turning back, protecting his rear

وكان تنزند يدري حال عسكرهِ

وغير خافٍ عليهِ سرُّ مخبرهِ

Defending without fear or hesitation

Kut Al Amara forced him to stop

فلم يجد ثمَّ بداً من تقهقرهِ

فارتد وهو يحامي عن مؤخرهِ

With Nureddin attacking from the South

Surrounding Kut from every side

مدافعاً غير هيابٍ ولا وكِلِ

كوتُ الامارةِ فيها أضطرَّ أن يقفا

With encirclement by land and air

Townshend's army was thus isolated

اذ خلفهُ كان نور الدين قد زحفا

من الجنوب عليهِ التف منعطفا

And it was hard for it to break the siege

It awaited aid but none arrived

وكوتُ شدَّ عليها الحصر مكتنفا

من كلّ ناحية بالبيض والأَسل

And its supporters' efforts to save it failed

Only resulting in failure

وجيش تنزند فيها بات منعزلا

وَشقُّهُ لنطاق الحصر ما سهلا

When he saw the attempt to resupply him had failed

And sources of provisions were exhausted

وكان منتظراً غوثاً فما وصلا

وسعيُ أعوانهِ في نجدهِ حصلا

He surrendered under compulsion as demanded

By Khalil Pasha and emptied Kut and turned back

لكنهُ خاب لم ينتج سوى الفشل

واذ رأى السعي في امدادهِ ذهبا

With his army contained in a prison camp

سدىً وأن معين الزاد قد نضبا

عنا وسلَّم مضطراً كما طلبا

خليل باشا وأخلى كوتَ وانقلبا

مع جيشهِ يحتويهم سور معتقل
