قم يراعي قم أطعني واكتبِ

ما عليكَ الآن يَمليه فمي

Rise shepherd rise and obey me, write

What my mouth now dictates to you

سر على القرطاس وارقم باهتمام

وتأنٍ وانتباهٍ وحذر

Move the pen on paper and number with care

And composure, attention and caution

فلساني مستعدٌّ للكلام

ويدي تجري ولا تشكو الخدر

My tongue is ready for speech

And my hand flows without fatigue

وإِذ ما وَسَعَ القولَ المقام

وأطلتُ الشرح لا تبدِ الضجر

And when speech fills the space

And I prolong the explanation, show no annoyance

واحتمل بالصبر عبءَ التعب

وألن بالعزم جنب السامِ

And bear the burden of exertion with patience

And gently steel your resolve

صرَّ فوق الطرس وازمر في يدي

كحسام صلَّ في كفَّي بطل

Grip the pen firmly in my hand

Like a polished sword in the palm of a hero

كلما زدتُكَ إرهاقاً زدِ

همة لا يعتريها من ملل

The more I burden you with fatigue

The more zeal you must have without boredom

وعلى الصعب استعن بالجلدِ

وعلى اليأس تغلب بالامل

And overcome the difficult with resilience

And defeat despair with hope

من حديدٍ انت لا من قصبِ

فعلى مَ خائفٌ من ثَلَمِ

You're made of iron not of reed

So who fears cracks from the pressure?

وصفُ هذي الحرب أعيا البلغا

وسبت أهوالها منا النهى

To describe this war has wearied eloquence

And its horrors have silenced advice

لا يرى الواصفُ في أغنى اللغى

ما يفي بالوصف طبق المشتهى

The describer finds not in the richest language

What would fulfill describing the desired

فإِلى الآن نرى شرّ الوغى

مستجدًّا كلما قلنا انتهى

For we still see the evils of turmoil

Renewed whenever we say it has ended

قلَّ من منا بها لم ينكبِ

وبحامي جمرها لم يوسمِ

Few among us have not stumbled in it

Or been marked by the embers of its live coals

نارَها الالمان عمداً أضرموا

واستطابوا لذعها واستعذبوا

The Germans deliberately ignited its fire

And relished its pain and enjoyed its bitterness

وعلى خوضِ لظاها أرغموا

حُلفا سفكَ الدماءِ اجتنبوا

And though immersed in its fierce flames

They swore to avoid bloodshed

وأخيراً حين هيجوا أقدموا

كأسودٍ تندري اذ تغضبُ

But finally when they were provoked

They sprang like angry lions

فعرا الدنيا قتامُ النُّوبِ

والشقاءُ احتفَّ كل الأُممِ

And the world was filled with the darkness of calamity

And misfortune befell all nations

كاد يمضي من سنيها أربعُ

ولظاها لم يزل يتَّقدُ

Nearly four years have passed

And its flames have not subsided

والأُلى في النصر كانوا قطعوا

شعروا بالشكِّ في ما اعتقدوا

And the Allies were sure they had cut

The path to victory in what they believed

عندما الروس رداها خلعوا

ومع الالمان صلحاً عقدوا

When the Russians cast it off

And made peace with the Germans

وبهِ الاعداءُ جلَّ الاربِ

أدركوا والروسُ شرَّ النقمِ

And thereby the enemies unbound the Allies

And inflicted upon the Russians the worst revenge

وعن النمسا وعن المانيا

خفّ ضغط الخوف وانزاح الخطر

And for Austria and for Germany

The pressure of fear was relieved and danger receded

وغروراً زعمت بلغاريا

أنها بالغةٌ منها الوطر

And Bulgaria arrogantly claimed

To have attained a turning point

وغدا التركيُّ معها شاديا

لأغاني التهاني بالظفر

And the Turk became elated with it

At the songs of triumph and victory

كلهم يرشفُ راح الطربِ

وهوَ عما في غدٍ آتٍ عمِ

They all sipped the nectar of joy

Oblivious to what the coming morrow would bring

وانقضى الثلثان من شهر أذار

وعلا من جوف باقيهِ الانين

And two-thirds of March passed

With groans rising from its depths

وجميع الناس باتوا في انتظار

ما لهم من غامض الغيب يبين

And all the people waited

For the unclear future to become clear

واذا الالمان قد ماطوا الستار

في فرنسا حيث كروا هاجمين

And then the Germans lifted the curtain

In France where they turned to attack

عللوا النفس بقطف العنبِ

قبلما يبلغ طورَ الحصرمِ

They justified resting to pluck the fruits

Before reaching the stage of their prime

تخذوا أهبتهم قبل الهجوم

وأتموا السعي في هذا الصدد

They prepared their equipment before the assault

And fully exerted themselves in this endeavor

وابتغاءَ الفوز بالنصر المروم

قذفوا بالجند واستاقوا العدد

Seeking victory in the coveted triumph

They hurled soldiers and summoned numbers

واستردُّوا ما لهم عبر التخوم

في بلاد الروس من باقي المدد

And forcibly recovered across the border

What remained for them of reinforcements in Russia

واذِ اغتروا ببرقٍ خُلبِ

بشَّروا الارض بسحِّ الديمِ

And when they were deceived by a flash of success

They gave the land tidings of spreading blood

وعلى الجيش البريطاني ما

عتم التيَّارُ منهم أن دفق

And they reckoned their ambitions would be met

And so their courage intensified

وتلَّظى حولهُ واضطرما

مارجٌ لو مسَّهُ البحر احترق

But hopes were dashed and failed

When the arrow did not hit and recoiled

لم يرعُهم ما اقتضاهُ من دِما

فرقٍ ضحوا بها تلوَ فرق

At first their seizing early success deluded them

When they penetrated the line of defense

واستلانوا كلَّ خشن المركبِ

رغبة في فوزهم بالمغنم

And they assumed the dawn of victory shone

And its light would soon radiate

لم يبالوا بالضحايا الهائله

طمعاً في فتح حسن أو بلد

So they persisted in invasion and occupation

And advanced by sacrificing victims

أمَّلوا أنَّ مناهم حاصله

وبهذا الأمل أشتدَّ الجلد

And disregarded every difficult request

And took lightly the harshest crises

لكن الآمالُ خابَت فائله

زندها لم يورِ والسهمُ صرَد

An attack flared beyond description

They continued it, extended it, and widened it

واذا سهم المنى لم يصبِ

طاشَ مرتدًّا الى حيث رُمي

And with irresistible determination

They seized some trenches by force

غرَّهم في البدءِ إحراز النجاح

عندما خطَّ الدفاع اخترقوا

Their victories made them arrogant

And deluded them into feeling their enemies were weak

فتظنوا أنَّ فجر النصر لاح

وضحاه عن قريب تشرقُ

And into the abyss of turbulent demise

They threw their legions among the nations

فتمادوا في اجتياح واكتساح

وبتقديم الضحايا اغرقوا

They crossed the rivers and passed the plains

They crushed the hills and occupied fortresses

واستهانوا كلَّ صعب المطلبِ

واستخفوا بأشد الإِزَم

They trampled the pride of villages and cities

And made the inhabitants drink the cup of affliction

وهجومٌ شبَّ عن ان يوصفا

واصلوه ومداه وسعوا

They tortured the captives and those led into captivity

And when their strength grew bitterer than aloes

وبعزم فالقٍ قلبَ الصفا

عنوةً بعض الصياصي انتزعوا

Through all this the Allies were not afraid

And prepared to endure adversity

فوزهم أبطرهم والحلفا

اوهموهم ضعفَهم فانخدعوا

And took comfort when they unanimously elected

To meet the invaders with the strongest equipment

والى لجِّ الردى المضطربِ

بسراياهم رمَوا عن أمَم

When the invaders approached its protection

He said, regarding its faith, that it was in my trust

عبروا الأنهرَ واجتازوا القُني

دوَّخوا الآطام واحتلُّوا الحصون

So we counted his word as the revelation of a prophet

Knowledgeable about the unseen that none else knew

وطأوا هام القرى والمدنِ

وفَروا عرض الفيافي والحزون

A hero for God, this hero

None in the assembly of heroes is his equal

جرَّعوا الاهلين صاب المحنِ

وابتلوهم بلظى ذلٍّ وهون

And millions of soldiers obeyed

And complied with his command as pliantly as saplings

عذبوا الاسرى ومن معهم سُبي

واذا قوهم امرَّ الألمِ

And the Allies, when they entrusted to him

The managing of their battle and hardship

كلُّ ذا والحلفا لم يرهبوا

واستعدُّوا لاحتمال الشدةِ

And said to him, arrange for us

The plans of confrontation and chart for us

واطمأنوا حين فوشَ انتخبوا

لاتقا الغازين أقوى عُدة

A lord of skill and cleverness that confounded

All the lords of wisdom and propriety

قال عن ايمان لما اقتربوا

من حماها إنها في عهدتي

We found none more far-sighted than him

Nor more adept at resolving complexities

فعددنا قوله وحي نبي

عالمٍ في الغيب ما لم يعلمِ

He deceived the Germans when the retreat

Returned, that reserves had run out

بطلٌ لله هذا البطلُ

ماله في مجمع الأبطال ثان

And that the enemy's army was not strong enough

And thus did not attack the dugouts

وملايين الجنود امتثلوا

واطاعوا أمرهُ طوع البنان

And according to this ideal approach

He advanced in his plan without wavering

واليه الحلفا إذ وكلوا

امرهم الخطا والصعبُ هان

Every inch he gained from it

Elicited the highest price

وله قالوا جميعاً رتبِ

خطط الهيجاءِ فينا وأرسمِ

He engaged his opponent with tricks

And with the stratagem of intricate scheming

ربُّ حذق ودهاءٍ حيرا

كلَّ أرباب الذكاءِ والرشد

He undertook to pelt him from up close

Then twist away from him as though defeated

لم نجد أبعد منهُ نظرا

لا ولا أبرع في حل العقد

And he spent a hundred and twenty days

Persevering in this pattern

أوهمَ الالمان لما القهقري

عادَ أن الاحتياطيَّ نفد

Making the exhaustion of enemies a pathway

For a ferocious attack never seen before

وعلى جيشِ العدو اللجبِ

ليس يقوى ولذا لم يهجمِ

And when he fulfilled the conditions of preparation

With God's will affirming his conscience

وعلى هذا الطريق الامثلِ

سارَ في خطته لا ينثني

He inflicted the enemies with the harshest defeats

And surprised them like inevitable destiny

كلُّ شبرٍ كان عنهُ ينجلي

يتقاضى عنهُ أغلى ثمنِ

This was when anxiety intensified

And danger upon Paris increased

يتلقى خصمهُ بالحيَل

وبتدبير المكرِ المطعنِ

And the invader reached its outskirts

After crossing the Marne

يتولى رميهُ عن كثبِ

ثمَّ يلوي عنهُ كالمنهزمِ

So the defender rose to revive hope

And dispel despair from the atmosphere of thought

وقضى عشرين يوماً ومئه

وهوَ مستنٌ على هذا النمط

And unleashed upon the Germans the swords of doom

Flooding them like an overflowing torrent

جاعلاً نهكَ الأعادي توطئه

لهجومٍ مثلهث لم يرو قط

وإذا استوفى شروط التهيئة

وعلى خاطره الله ربط

أوقع الاعدا بأسوا منشبِ

وافتجاهم كالقضاءِ المبرمِ

كان هذا عندما اشتد الوجل

وعلى باريس قد زاد الخطر

والى أرباضها الغازي وصل

أو تدنى بعدما المارن عبر

فانبري الحامي لإِحياءِ الأمل

ولقشع اليأس من جو الفكر

وعلى الالمان بيضَ القضبِ

سلَّ يغشاهم كسيلٍ عرمِ
