أَتانِيَ عَن مَروانَ بِالغَيبِ أَنَّهُ
مُقيدٌ دَمي أَو قاطِعٌ مِن لِسانِيا
Word reached me secretly about Marwan: that he
means to take my blood—or cut out my tongue.
وَإِنَّكَ إِن تَسبِقَ إِلَيَّ بِفِعلَةٍ
تَسوءُ الصَديقَ أَو تَسُرُّ الأَعادِيا
And if you forestall me with some deed
that grieves a friend or gladdens enemies,
تَجِد بَطَلاً شاكي السِلاحِ مُجَرِّباً
تَفادى أُسودُ الغابِ مِنهُ تَفادِيا
you will find a hero, fully armed and seasoned—
from whom the lions of the thicket recoil and flee.
