1. And while a man was only yesterday at ease and full of joy,

    among his family, delighted with life and fond of its pleasures,

  2. unaware, an event from his appointed end befell him;

    he scarcely lingered before he died, as if struck down.

  3. Then, by the morning of the third day, he lay

    shrouded, with neither spirit nor a trace of life.

  4. They weep for him and bring him to a dark pit

    whose sides are heaped with earth and clods.

  5. Of all he used to gather, he took no provision

    except burial perfume and the cloths that covered him,

  6. and a waft from sticks kindled for him;

    how little provision that is for one departing.

  7. I ask God to forgive my past deeds

    and my missteps; if He punishes me for them, I flee.

  8. In whichever land his death is destined,

    if he does not go toward it willingly, he is driven there.
