ألا يا عُبيد الله ما زلتَ مُولعاً

ببكر لها تهدي اللَّغَا والتهدُّدا

Alas! O slave of God are you still infatuated

With a young maiden who gives you only threats and rejection?

كأن حُماة الحيّ من بكر بن وائل

بذي الرَّمث أُسدٌ قد تَبَوِّأنَ غَرقدا

As if the protectors of the living from Bakr bin Wa'il

In Dhi Al-Rumath were lions that took up residence.

وكنت سفيها قد تعودت عادةً

وكل امرئ جارٍ على ما تعوَّدا

You were foolish, accustomed to a habit,

And each man persists in what he is accustomed to.

فأصبحت مسلوباً على شرِّ آلةٍ

صَريعَ قنا وسط العجاجةِ مُفْردَا

So you have been stripped at the worst possible time,

Lying slain alone amidst the sand grouse.

تَشُقُّ عليك الجيب ابنة هانئٍ

مُسليَةً تُبدي الشَّجا والتلُّددا

The daughter of Han'i grieves you,

Mocking and showing you only hostility and rejection.

وكانت ترى ذا الأمر قبل عيانه

ولكن أمر الله أهدى لك الرّدى

She saw the matter before it happened,

But the will of God guided you to return.

وقالت عبيد الله لأتأت وائلاً

فَقُلتُ لها لا تعجَلي وانظري غدا

And Obaidullah said to me, don't rush

And wait until tomorrow comes.

فقد جاء ما منَّيتَها فَتَسَلَّبت

عليك وأمسى الجيب منها مُقَدّدا

What you wished for has come about and she slipped away

Leaving your pocket empty and torn.

حباط أخو الهيجا حُرَيُث بنُ جابرٍ

بَجيّاشةٍ تحكي الهدير المُنَدَّدا

Failed is the brother of Al-Hujaa, Hurayth bin Jabir

With a musical instrument that plays only noisy tunes.
