1. I have seen the nights consume a man,

as earth consumes the flakes that fall from iron.

  2. And when Death comes, she seeks

nothing more from the soul of a child of Adam.

  3. And I know she will charge again, until

she fulfills her vow by taking Abu al-Walid.

  4. We were created—we ourselves, and all the children of souls—

and we are neither hard stone nor iron.

  5. Though one day I was stricken by the loss of my peers,

I had indeed been granted the pleasure of far-reaching hope.
