مررت على حدثي بزمان بعدما

تقطع أقران الصبا والوسائلُ

I passed by my youth after

My peers of youth and means were severed

فكنت كظبي مفلت ثم لم يزل

به الحين حتى أعلقته الحبائلُ

So I was like a lost gazelle, then ceased not

To be entangled in sorrows

وأني لقوام إلى الضيف موهنا

اذا أسبل الستر البخيل المواكلُ

And I rise to serve the guest in weakness

When the niggard curtain is let down in refusal

دعا فأجابته كلاب كثيرة

على ثقة مني بأني فاعلُ

He called and many dogs responded

Trusting I would do it

وما دون ضيفي من تلاد تحوزه

لي النفسُ الا أن تصان الحلائلُ

And nothing of my guest's provisions

Does my soul grudge saving proprieties

اني لأطوي عن صديقي شرتي

اذا أثرت في أكرميك الاناملُ

I conceal my friend's defects

When my fingers trace in honoring you

بنيت على خلق الرجال بأعظم

خفاف تثنى بينهن المفاصلُ

I built on the temper of men with greatest

Pliancy that bends between them in the joints

وقلب جلت عنه الشؤون وان تشأ

يخبرك ظهر الغيب ما أنت فاعلُ

And a heart from which cares are averted, and if you wish

The unseen world informs you what you will do

ولست بربل مثلك احتملت به

عوان نأت عن فحلها وهي حافلُ

And I am no jenny like you who bore

The burden of her stallion when she was pregnant

فجئت ابن أحلام النيام ولم تجد

لصهرك ألا نفسها من تباعلُ

So I came, son of the dreams of sleep and found

No in-law for you but yourself to couple with
