1. She grieved when word reached her that I

Had squandered my money during nights in Sofar.

  2. So she spent her night awake,

Asking the All-Merciful to set my affairs right.

  3. And we met at our appointed time,

Like a phantom in the darkness, companion to a phantom.

  4. And we shared our sorrows; then, when she heard

That despair's afflictions filled my mind,

  5. She removed the necklace from her neck and said:

Take it and sell it, at a high price or not.

  6. And tears flowed over its beads,

    Like pearls melted over pearls.

  7. Alas for my breast—how often in love it has been struck

    By blades falling upon blades!

  8. O Thurayya, keep your necklace away from me;

Indeed, my abasement in love is the most unyielding wealth.

  9. O Thurayya, whenever you are with me,

Then, among people, I am one of the richest men.

  10. Return the necklace to your neck, for my eye

Loves the neck only when it is adorned.

  11. If you wish to keep me away from Sofar,

Then set our meeting for every night.
