لَقينا يَومَ أُلَّيسٍ وَأَمغى
وَيَومَ المَقرِ آسادَ النَهارِ
On the days of Ullays and Amgha
And the day of Maqar, the sun lingered long
فَلَم أَرَ مِثلَها فَضِلاتِ حَربٍ
أَشُدُّ عَلى الجَحاجِحَةِ الكِبارِ
Never have I seen the like of battle's aftermath
So hard upon the mighty veterans
قَتَلنا مِنهُمُ سَبعينَ أَلفاً
بَقِيَّةَ حَربِهِم غِبَّ الإِسارِ
We killed seventy thousand of them
The rest of their warriors vanished into captivity
سِوى مَن لَيسَ يُحصى مِن قَتيلٍ
وَمَن قَد غالَ جولانَ الغُبارِ
Except those beyond counting among the slain
And those the swirling dust had swallowed
