1. I clung to worldly means, forsaking Him who governs my affairs;

    so He severed them from me, and they became my regrets.

  2. Had I sought sufficiency in God alone,

    free of all creatures, I would have needed neither Zayd nor ʿAmr.

  3. O You, boundless in hidden grace, take me into Your care;

    through Your kindness, my Master, open my breast to contentment.

  4. Clothe the sanctuary of my lowliness, through Your might, in honor,

    and let a veil fall over concealment, O You who draws down the veil.

  5. Do not try me before humankind with some grave ordeal

    that exceeds my strength and exhausts my patience.

  6. And if the enemies see how they might scheme against me,

    then seize them with the hand of restraint, from a direction I cannot discern.

  7. Preserve the dignity of my face from the humiliation of begging;

    through Your bounty, enfold me in ease amid hardship.

  8. By the light of knowledge, make my heart and outward form jewel-like,

    and remove the crushing burden of my sins, which has made my back groan.

  9. For my sake, mercifully honor those close to me,

    and hedge their fellowship with discernment against the evil of evil.

  10. And be, my Master, my aid and my succor always—

    my strength and my refuge always, and the wealth within my poverty.
