يفوح كفوح المسك فاغم نشرها
إذا التحبت فيها ذلاذل ريح
Its scent wafts as musk wafts, the perfume it spreads rich and heady,
when the trailing skirts of a wind entwine within her.
يقول لها الطش السماوي والصبا
مقيما على تلك الصبابة فوحي
The heavenly drizzle and the east breeze say to her,
with the breeze lingering over that ardent longing: “Breathe forth!”
مضاجع سعدان مغارس حنوة
مناجم قيصوم منابت شيح
Beds of saʿdān, plots planted with ḥanwah;
mines of qaysūm, seedbeds of wormwood.
اذا ملح المكاء رجع صغيره
يجاوبه قمريها بمليح
When the mukkāʾ sweetens its song, its chick takes up the refrain;
her turtledove answers it with the charm of melody.
كأن بديحا والغريض تطارحا
على وتر للموصلي فصيح
As though Badīḥ and al-Gharīḍ were exchanging songs
upon an eloquent string of al-Mawṣilī’s.
