One day I am with the sailor, the two of us riding
the nail-fastened vessel upon a surging ocean.
At another time, in a vast wilderness, no one accompanies me
except the jackal and the fierce, ravening lion.
At times I am among a rabble wholly devoid of virtue,
my mount between a farrier and a perfumer.
At another time, I sit among luminaries and confer with them
about what may draw me nearer to the Creator’s mercy.
