1. إليكَ سَبَقنا السوطَ وَالسجنَ تحتنا

    حيالٌ يسامينَ الظِلالَ وَلُقَّحُ

    To you we raced, though whips and jails beneath us lay,

    Past oleanders flowering in the vales,

  2. إلى نافِعٍ لا نَرتجي ما أَصابَنا

    تحومُ عَلَينا السانِحاتُ وتبرَحُ

    Seeking no boon from those whom we obey,

    Though over us the willing executioners prevail.

  3. فإن أَكُ مَجلوداً فكُن أَنتَ جالدي

    وإن أَكُ مَذبوحاً فَكُن أَنتَ تَذبَحُ

    If I'm the one whose body must be flayed,

    Then you be he who wields the blade.
