The people of Syria set their hopes on ʿAmr, while I
surely set mine on ʿAbd Allāh when truths are put to the test.
Indeed, Abū Mūsā will vindicate our right
when he strikes ʿAmr with one of his thunderbolts
and establishes it, until ʿAmr’s jugular gushes;
and at that we shall be as furious as the most wrathful man.
Yet no one can outstrip ʿAmr
when the riders of the fleetest steeds race all-out.
By God, what Iraq and its people will suffer
from ʿAmr because of Abū Mūsā, unless he strikes him with calamities!
