لَولا الَّذي حُمِّلتُ مِن حُبِّكُم
لَكانَ في إِظهارِهِ مَخرَجُ
Had it not been for the love with which you burdened me,
There would have been a way out
أَو مَذهَبٌ في الأَرضِ ذو فُسحَةٍ
أَجَل وَمَن حَجَّت لَهُ مَذحجُ
Or an open space on earth into which I could have fled.
By God, he who finds a way out can run away!
لَكِن سَباني مِنكُمُ شادِنٌ
مُرَبَّبٌ ذو غُنَّةٍ أَدعَجُ
But you have harnessed me with a stubborn camel,
A singing camel with a lovely voice,
أَغَرُّ مَمكورٌ هَضيمُ الحَشى
قَد ضاقَ عَنهُ الحَجلُ والدُملُجُ
A bold camel with a slit nostril, whose mind is made up,
Too bulky for narrow mountain paths and ravines.
