1. يقول علوي معي في الشعر طالع وشاره

    تشن الأبيات شنون

    My friend says to me in poetry, rising and falling

    The verses pour out their laments

  2. وتنخل الوجد في قلبي كنخل الصفاره

    بعد النقاه والطحون

    And longing oozes into my heart like the sap of palm trees

    After sifting and grinding

  3. ومطحن الشعر تشتى كل جمعه وقاره

    والمد يشتى خنون

    The mill of poetry pleases every dignified gathering

    Meter varies, changing

  4. وازعف قريض البديع في الليل زعف الجداره

    واعجن توارى عجون

    The most intricate rhetorical devices weaken in the night like a fence

    I knead obscurities into dough

  5. واخبز قوافي على صاج الهوى والحراره

    مصرى وبنت الصحون

    And bake rhymes on the griddle of passion and heat

    Egyptian, and daughter of plates

  6. وحب الاوعال يريق الطبع تاره وتاره

    يعطفه في الزبون

    The love of lambs flows from my nature at times and at times

    It inclines towards the suitors

  7. وكل من هام طلوع لا بد له من خساره

    ونون وما يسطرون

    And everyone who is infatuated with the rising sun is bound to fail

    Nun, and what they inscribe

  8. والظبي الأطرم إذا كان في طباعه براره

    فذاك في الحسن دون

    The wounded gazelle, if there is defiance in his nature

    That is inferior in beauty

  9. ومن أراد الربيع أنه يطفي حراره

    الهذ على الكازرون

    And whoever wants the spring to extinguish heat

    Take this to heart

  10. وحق عدل مقام الدين وحرمة جواره

    أن العذار ما يشون

    It is right to respect the station of religion and the sanctity of neighborhood

    That the innocent are not harmed

  11. هذا إذا كان زغب أما إذا كان معاره

    دخل مع اهل الدقون

    This is if there is foolishness. But if there is defiance

    He enters with the people of fines

  12. واستغفر الله إذا كان في كلامي جساره

    فانا من التايبون

    I seek God's forgiveness if there is any insolence in my words

    For I am of the repentant

  13. خبره لطاف كلهم والشعر مثل العماره

    إذا بنوا يهرجون

    News of the subtle, all of them, and poetry is like buildings

    When they collapse

  14. والزمع فيهم وزوب مفجع يشق المراره

    وفي الأدب ماهرون

    And hope in them is frail, causing bitter anguish

    And in literature they are skilled

  15. مني عليهم سلام ما في البروق افتراره

    مبشره بالمزن

    From me greetings to them, without pretense in lightning

    Harbingering blessings

  16. أو ما تعصنف مزحزح غصن تحت الستاره

    فحير العاشقون

    Or whatever is not a branch swaying beneath the veil

    Perplexing the lovers

  17. وزفرة العشق يطفيها اللبن والخياره

    وتشتعل بالسمون

    And the sigh of passion extinguished by milk and cucumbers

    And ignited by fennel
