أعاذلتي من لوم دعاني

أقلا اللوم ان لم تعذراني

My darling blames me for my neglect

Go easy with blame if you can't excuse me

فاني قد دللت على عجوز

مبرقعة مخضبة البنان

For I have spoiled an elderly woman

Veiled, with dyed lips

تغضن جلدها واخضر الا

إذا ما ضرجت بالزعفران

Whose skin is wrinkled except when

It's reddened with saffron

فلما أن دخلت وحادثتني

أظلتني بيوم أرونان

When she entered and spoke to me

She kept me back for a day of bliss

تحدثني عن الأزمان حتى

سمعت نداء حرٍّ بالأذان

Speaking of times gone by

Until I heard the clear call to prayer

فقالت قد نكحت اثنين شتى

فلما صاحباني طلقاني

She said "I married two different men

But when they were with me, they divorced me

وأربعة نكحتهم فماتوا

فليت عريف حيٍّ قد نعاني

And four others I married died

Would that a living groom had married me!"

وقالت ما تلادك قلت مالي

حمار ظالع ومزادتان

She said "How many children do you have?" I said "None"

"I have a braying donkey and two beds

وبوريّ وأربعة زيوف

وثوباَ مفلس متخرقان

An old fur coat and four ragged gowns

And a worn out gown that won't pass inspection

وقطعة جُلَّةٍ لا تمر فيها

ودنَّا عومة متقابلان

And two broken pots."

She said "I'm satisfied, now pay the thousand"

فقالت قد رضيت فسم ألفا

ليسمع ما تقول الشاهدان

So all could hear what the witnesses say

"But I don't have a ready thousand for you

وما لكِ عندنا ألف عتيد

ولا تسع تعد ولا ثمان

Not nine, or eight or seven or six

For you I have only deep humiliation"

ولا سبع ولا ست ولكن

لكم عندي الطويل من الهوان
