أقول ليحي ليلة الحبس سادرا

ونومي به نوم الأسير المقيد

I say to Yahya on the night of imprisonment overflowing,

And my sleep with it is the sleep of the shackled prisoner.

أعني على رعي النجوم ولحظها

أعنك على تحبير شعر مقصد

I help watch the stars and glance at them,

You help sharpen poetry of purpose.

ففي حالتينا عبرة وتفكر

وأعجب شيئ حبس أعمى ومقعد

In both our states is a lesson and reflection,

And the strangest thing is the imprisonment of a blind cripple.

كلانا إذا العكاز فارق كفه

ينيخ صريعاً أو على الوجه يسجد

Both of us, if the cane leaves his palm,

Collapses dead or prostrates on his face.

فعكازه تهدي إلى السبل أكمها

وأخرى مقام الرجل قامت مع اليد

For his cane guides his blind steps,

And the other is a prop for the hand and foot.
