حبسي وحبس أبي عُلَيْ

يةَ من أعاجيب الزمان

My imprisonment and my father Ali's

Are among the wonders of time

أعمى يقاد ومقعد

لا الرجل منه ولا اليدان

A blind man being led and a lame man

With neither legs nor hands to use

هذا بلا بصرٍ هنا

ك وبي يخب الحاملان

This one has no sight, that one here

Carries me while both our feet fail

يا من رأى ضب الفلا

ة قرين حوت في مكان

O you who saw a whale swallowing fish

While its mate was left in place

طرفي وطرف أبي علي

يَة دهرنا متوافقان

My eyes and my father Ali's

Our lifetime's misfortune is shared

من يفتخر بجواده

فجيادنا عكازتان

Let him who boasts of his steed know

That our rides are two crutches

طرفان لا علفاهما

بشرى ولا يتصاولان

Two feet that no food can heal

No glad tidings or hopes at all

هبني وإياه الحريْ

ق أكان يسطع بالدخان

Prison took me and him whether

Fate's fire smoldered or burned bright
