Al-Haytham ibn ʿAdī has a lineage that gathered
his fathers, sparing us the counting.
Count ʿAdī; were his life prolonged
as long as mankind lived, the count would neither lessen nor grow.
My soul be a ransom for the sons of ʿAbd al-Madān, who have
flung him face down and struck him from above with clubs,
until they forced him away from their noble kinswoman,
and taught him, through humiliation, where ʿAdī's roots lay.
O son of the vile woman, whom can I lampoon and disgrace
when I lampoon you, though your descent is traced to no one?
