1. And a fair nobleman of ʿIjl—I saw his rain-cloud,

    and his swords putting an end to the blows of fate.

  2. Through him, every man deemed miserly learned to give,

    and on the day of terror every coward advanced boldly.

  3. And how many a day of yours had its edifice raised by you,

    with sheathed swords or with feasts served in bowls!

  4. I held out to him my claim to protection, and he safeguarded it;

    and he made my hand and tongue independent of anyone else.

  5. I drank and gave the drinking companion his fill with his wealth,

    and I exacted wine's revenge upon Ramadan.

  6. And I owed Shawwal a pledge,

    so the gifts of his generosity served as surety.
