1. When he dons the armor of war, there tremble

    the earth's bowels, and the leveled spears grow bloody.

  2. And he shines beneath the battle-dust, until he seems

    a rising dawn walking through the darkness of night.

  3. And no man you pursue has any escape from you,

    even if the paths of ascent lift him into the sky.

  4. Yes—one fugitive whose whereabouts can be found by neither

    darkness nor a radiant light from the dawn.

  5. And he has built up what no predecessor had attained;

    and if a later man gains some of it, he is but a follower.
