الفخر بالعلم لا بالجاه والمال
والمجد بالجد لا بالجد والخال
The pride is in knowledge, not in status and money,
And glory is in diligence, not in ancestry and uncles.
كم من ملىء وضىء الوجه تحسبه
للعلم خلا ولكن فكره خالى
How many a glowing face you think
Is empty of knowledge, though his thoughts are vacant,
في المال والجاه أسباب الغرور ومن
يغترّ بالأهل كالمغتر بالآل
In money and status are causes of arrogance, and he who
Is fooled by family like one fooled by idols.
تلك الامور سحابات مغيرها
حوادث الدهر من حال إلى حال
Such things are clouds that change,
The events of fate from one state to another.
ولكن العلم لا ينفك صاحبه
معظم القدر في حل وترحال
But knowledge never leaves its owner
Honored, settled or traveling.
أفق السماكين بل أعلاه مقعده
في كل حال تراه ناعم البال
It raises the lowly to the highest heavens,
Its seat exalted in every case, serene of mind.
إن عاش عاش أجل الناس منزلة
أو مات مات بإعظام وإجلال
If he lives he lives most respected of people,
Or dies, with magnificence and veneration.
في القبر حيّ بما أبقاه من اثر
وحسن ذكر بأقوال وأفعال
In the grave alive by what traces he left,
And fair repute in words and deeds.
تعنو الوجوه لذكراه وسيرته
وينحنى الراس للتعظيم بالتالي
Faces incline at the mention of him and his ways
And heads bow in reverence consequently.
وإن عندى لبرهانا أقدّمه
وينحنى الرأس للتعظيم بالتالي
And I have evidence I present
And heads bow in reverence consequently.
هذا الإمام إمام الفضل أجمعه
الشافعيّ سديد الراي والقال
This imam, the quintessence of all merit,
Al-Shafi’i, sound in opinion and speech.
بحر من الشرع قد شطت شواطئه
وبر بر لملاح وحمال
An ocean of sacred law with shores overflowing
A land of blessing for sailor and porter.
وبدر فضل أضاء الكون يره
وشمس هدى لأفراد وأقيال
A full moon of merit that illuminated existence,
A guiding sun for individuals and groups.
كم من مسائل قد ضافت مسالكها
برأيه انفرجت من غير إمهال
How many issues with blocked paths
His opinion opened without hesitation.
وكم تجافى بجنب عن مضاجعه
وما استلذّ بإغفاء وإغفال
And how much he shunned the comfort of his bed
Indulging neither in slumber or negligence.
وكم لدرك علوم جاب مقفرة
جرداء مرداء من ماء ومن مال
And how much he strove to grasp bare sciences
Barren, threadbare of water and money.
وطالما جد فيها وهو منفرد
وواصل السير أميالا بأميال
And how much he labored solitary
Continuing for miles and miles.
وما ثنته عن التحصيل متربة
ولا اعتراه فتور حال إقلال
Neither allurement hindered his seeking
Nor fatigue or listlessness overtook him,
حتى سما فوق هام النجم مقعده
ونال بين البرايا حسن إقبال
Until he ascended past the summit of the stars
And attained good fortune in open spaces.
وشيخه مالك والله بشره
بأنه في المعالي فرد أمثال
His master was Malik and Allah gave him tidings
That he was unmatched in sublime qualities.
والصاحبان له بالفضل قد شهدا
كما له شهد الاتباع في الحال
The two friends bore witness to his merit
As his followers witnessed at the time.
بحر تلاطم بالأمواج ساحله
عذب بلا حمأ فيه وصلصال
A tumultuous ocean with overflowing coasts
Sweet without sediment or pebbles in it.
سفينة العلم تجرى فوق لجته
شراعها الشرع في رسو وتجوال
The ship of knowledge sailing on its flood
Her sails the Sacred Law, voyaging and cruising.
إلى قريش وفهر ينتمى نسبا
فهو ابن عم رسول الله والآل
To Quraysh he traces his lineage,
Cousin of Allah’s Messenger and Household.
من معشر شرف الرحمن محتدهم
خلاصة العرب بل أقطاب أبطال
From the God-fearing Hashimites distinguished stock,
The finest of Arabs, even the bravest heroes.
يقول مفتخرا من كان تابعه
أقوال حبر الورى في الشرع أقوى لي
He says, proudly, whoever makes me
His model in interpreting the Prophet’s words has the best support.
بالشافعي وأهل البيت فاغتبطي
مصر وقولى لقد بلغت آمالي
Rejoice in al-Shafi’i and the Household
And say to me, “You have realized your hopes!”
ويا بنى مصر زوروهم ولا تثقوا
بمارقين من الإسلام ضلال
O Egyptians, visit them and do not trust
Those who have strayed from Islam, lost.
كيف التاسى بقول المنكرين وهم
صم وبكم وعمى شر جهال
How to find solace in the words of unbelievers when they are
Deaf, mute and blind – the worst of the ignorant!
إن الزيارة بالإخلاص غايتها
دفع الشدائد من أهواء أهوال
Visiting the purehearted, its only purpose is
To deflect the disasters of dreadful calamities.
إن المودة في القربى لها صلة
بالسيد المصطفى في كل أحوال
For loving the Prophet’s kin indeed relates
To the Master of Messengers in all circumstances.
وباب آل رسول الله قاطبة
واستمطروا من عطاه كل هطال
The house of Allah’s Messenger including
His family as a whole – seek from their gifts generously.
فأمطر الكل من أمداده منحا
فعاد كل بإنعام وإفضال
So he who draws from the plenty of their support
Returns with favor and nobility.
جاه عريض وكف بالندى وكفت
جودا فراحت بأوجاع وأوجال
Broad glory, a palm that rains blessings curbing
Suffering and distress with benevolence.
يا قاضى الشرع هذا يوم مولدكم
ونظرة منك فيها كل إقبال
O judge of Sacred Law, this is your birthday,
Every aspect of it marked with good fortune.
وعادة الفرح الميمون طالعه
تعطى الهدايا ولكن دون إقلال
And smiles attend its auspicious dawning.
It is customary then to offer presents freely.
فكل من حضروا يرجو زيادتها
حاشاك تبدل قنطارا بمثقال
All gathered here hope you will increase them –
Far be it you decrease a pound to a gram!
يا ربنا انصر على الأعدا خليفتنا
وزلزل الكفر منه شر زلزال
O Lord, make mighty over enemies our Caliph,
Shake misbelief in him with a great quake.
واجعل به راية الإسلام خافية
تظل كل فريق خير إظلال
Make by him the banner of Islam a refuge
Shading each sect – the best shade.
وامنح رجال الهدى والشرع مطالبهم
واجعل مشاربهم من خير سلسال
Grant the people of guidance and Sacred Law their wants,
Make their ways among the best channels.
وتب علينا وجمل حال من حضروا
ونور القلب واقبل كل تسآل
Turn toward us and make beautiful the state of all present
Enlighten hearts and accept each yearning!
