I do not fear Time, in ease or hardship;
The pure lords of the Prophet’s House are my supporters.
Nor do I fear the hand of days striking me,
For they are the mightiest of humankind in the protection they grant a neighbor.
They are the Chosen One’s kindred—God Himself has honored them;
They are the stars of guidance—better still, the finest moons.
They are the builders of loftiness, indeed its pillars;
They are humankind’s fortresses—the wall of all walls.
Love of them is faith; affection for them is a duty.
It pleases God and pleases the Creator’s Chosen One.
God revealed their rightful love in al-Shura,
And the eye grew glad when the reciter chanted it.
Affection for the near of kin is a bond
With the Chosen One, and a shield against the flame of fire.
From the Scripture’s decisive word we learned their purity
From the stain of defilement—indeed, from every alien taint.
Whoever is not clothed by love of the Prophet’s House
With a robe of radiance is naked despite all he wears.
They are the light that saves this universe from darkness,
And guidance for all—the heedless and the night traveler alike.
The children whom Fatima the Radiant bore—
The very soul of lordship, illustrious and pure.
The most God-fearing of humankind—of all creation together—
And the noblest of creation, from desert folk to city-dwellers.
By mentioning them, evil and affliction are warded off,
And slander against them breaks every tyrant.
When they are named, goodness rains down along their story
Like a cloudburst from a sky of pouring clouds.
If Time should one day bare its fangs,
I place my hope in none but them when I am straitened.
For their courtyard has been filled with generosity;
Even the sea, with all its waves and currents, falls short of it.
They are my succor, my aid, and my treasure
In the broad reach of my aims, in ease and hardship;
When I race toward the good deeds I seek,
And when I pursue the heights, whether attainment comes or some new turn;
And when I triumph over anyone who would abase me,
Casting them onto the brink of a towering, crumbling precipice,
Until they taste the torment of humiliation and grief
From the blow of Time or the stain of shame.
Gently—take your time, people, and deliberate;
Cleanse your creed of the blight of denial.
You will never strike your target while the Prophet’s House watches over me
With a gaze of honor, favor, and veneration.
Before that can happen, swords will tear you apart;
By God, you will never succeed in seeking to harm me.
No outsider is equal to my own kin
Among the noble, nor an aloof man to one who visits.
I have taken them as a shield with which I charge
Against aggressors, like a ravaging lion.
I have also taken them as a fortress protecting me
On Resurrection Day from my burdens and my sins,
And from hardship in this world or sickness,
From a constricted life or the stripping away of veils.
O kindred of the Chosen One, from the overflow of your favors,
How much honor I have gained through you in every stage of my life!
I gained overflowing eminence from your hands,
Until my poems aspired to the gleam of glory.
Glory stretched out its right hand to me and clasped mine,
So everyone envies me in this abode.
Al-Kumayt’s praise of the Prophet’s House taught me,
And, following him, I rode the horses of the course.
Yet Egypt is a mother to me, and she is my nurse,
Born of plains, highlands, and valleys.
By God, do not deny me your care,
For you and God’s Messenger are my supporters.
You are the gladness within my hearing and my sight,
And within my heart, at home and on my travels.
May I never cease ascending the heights through your care,
And may all remember my works with gratitude—
By the sanctity of the Chosen One, sent forth from Mudar,
The best of prophets, who took refuge in the Cave.
May the God of the Throne bless him whenever
The woodland doves coo at dawn and before dawn;
And bless his radiant family, whose virtues are pure,
Together with every Companion, Helper, and relation by marriage.
