للعلم أهلٌ لهام الفضل تيجان

والدين حصن وهم للحصن أركان

Science has people worthy of its crowns

Religion a fortress, they its pillars and grounds

قوم بخدمتهم للشرع قد رفعوا

بين البرية قدرا أينما كانوا

Serving its law, they raised its worth

In wilderness, wherever they were found

بهديهم كل من في الكون معتصم

إن الحياة بغير العلم خسران

All in creation, by their guidance redeemed

Without knowledge, life is but profound loss

من شب في العلم حتى شاب مفرقه

فإنه في الورى لا شك إنسان

Whoever pursued knowledge from youth till grayed

Is undoubtedly a man of great renown

فالناس في هذه الدنيا مقسمة

إلى ثلاث وهذا القول ميزان

People in this world fall in three partitions

As this saying distinguishes plain and sound

مال وجاه ونور العلم ثالثها

وكل قسم له في الناس خلان

Wealth, status, and knowledge, the third of its kind

Each has in people its own constituency bound

فصاحب المال قارون بثروته

وصاحب الجاه إن حققت هامان

The wealthy like Qarun for his riches

The elite like Haman should you study and sound

وصاحب العلم مغبوط بنعمته

أما سواه فمكروب وحيران

But happy is the knowledgeable for their grace

While others remain confused and astound

يسير ذو العلم والأنوار تقدمه

لأنه بجمال العلم مزدان

The learned walks on with light leading ahead

For with knowledge, they're crowned

أهل العلوم لهم بالعلم منزلة

من دونها في العلا كسرى وساسان

The scholarly an abode apart from the rest

Above which neither Chosroes nor Sasanians are found

بالعلم في الناس أحياء وإن قبروا

لا يعتريهم مدى الأزمان نسيان

In life, the learned are alive though interred

Time does not make them in remembrance drowned

هذا الإمام إمام الفضل قاطبة

الشافعيّ على ما قلت برهان

This Imam, the Imam of all virtue combined

Al-Shafi'i, as I have substantiated and found

هذا الإمام له في كل معترك

من الشريعة تحقيق وتبيان

For every issue of law he has made clear

Interpreting and analyzing without compound

كم أسهر الطرف في حل العويص وفي

فهم الحديث وقلب الغمر تومان

Many a night did he stay up solving the abstruse

Understanding hadith, turning hardness to softness round

وكم أبان بآي الذكر من حكم

أثنى عليه بها شرع وقرآن

Revealing wisdom in Qur'anic verses

Lauded for which by Law and Qur'an he is crowned

هذا هو القرشي المعتلى نسبا

أبوه فهو معد ثم عدنان

He is the Qurashi, the loftiest in lineage

His father below, above him Ma'ad and Adnan abound

من معشر طهر الرحمن محتدهم

فهم أصول وهم روح وريحان

Amongst the purified kin of Ar-Rahman combined

The original tribe, bliss and joy profound

من يبتهم ظهر الإسلام فانتكست

لعصبة الشرك أصنام وأوثان

If you take shelter in them, Islam's backing expands

While idols and statues of polytheists confound

هذا هو البحر تجرى فوق لجّته

سفينة العلم فيها النور ريان

He is the sea above whose tide sails forth

The ship of knowledge, enlightened, knowledge-drowned

شراعها الشرع والإسلام رائدها

وكل محمولها أمن وإيمان

Its sails are law, Islam its captain steering ahead

Carried within it, safety and faith are found

رست على ساحل الجوديّ ثابتة

فلا يزعزعها في الناس طوفان

Docked on the coast of generosity, firmly anchored

In people not shaken, though floods may abound

يا قوم هذا الإمام الشافعي لهو

في دوحة الفضل أثمار وأفنان

O people, this Imam Ash-Shafi'i is indeed

Fruits and branches of virtue in him are found

قاضى الشريعة والحبر الذي شهدت

بفضل مذهبه شيب وشبان

The Jurist of law, the scholar witnessed for

Young and old attested to merits in him compound

من علم هذا طباق الأرض قد ملئت

إن الحديث على هذا لبرهان

Before his birth, Hadith was verified through him

This is the pride, no crown or minaret need surround

من قبل مولده صح الحديث به

هذا هو الفخر لا تاج ونيشان

Of vast generosity his early rain

Collecting clouds of aid that respond to each sound

رحب الرحاب غزير الجود صيبه

جم التوال وبالأمداد هتان

No distressed refugee enters his court

But finds care from his munificence abound

لا يدخل العائذ الملهوف ساحته

إلا وكان له من جوده شان

Look upon us, your habit of generosity we knew

For by this feast, we're all constricted and bound

فانظر إلينا فقد عودتنا كرما

إن الجميع بهذا الحفل ضيقان

Egypt through you and the House was ennobled

No cities can equal such glory profound

مصر بكم وبآل البيت قد شرفت

فليس يشبهها في المجد بلدان

But I seek God's forgiveness, for Taybah too

Through the Chosen One, has honor atop honor renowned

أستغفر الله إلا طيبة فلها

بالمصطفى شرف يزهو ويزدان

O people, through trials and times this Imam

For visitors, a pillar of aid is found

يا قوم هذا الإمام الشافعي على

حوادث الدهر للزوار معوان

So many kings at his doorstep paused

And for success, to him were obediently bound

فكم ملوك على أعتابه وقفت

وكم له بنجاح القصد قد دانوا

Each attains by the extent of their intention

Goodly intention for virtues a welcome all around

كل ينال على مقدار نيته

فنية الخير للخيرات قربان

For God's sake, shun all who object

In their creed, deviance and flaws are found

بالله زوروا وجافوا كل معترض

ففي عقيدتهم زيغ ونقصان

O assembly of people, Ash-Shafi'i indeed

In your Egypt, has might and dominion renowned

يا معشر القوم إن الشافعي له

في مصركم هذه عز وسلطان

Each year by his birth we find bliss

Whether in Rajab or Sha'ban we're around

في كل عام لنا أنس بمولده

إن جاءنا رجب أو هل شعبان

May He who is Eternal preserve those who served him

And celebrated him, for all are brethren bound

رعى المهيمن من قاموا بخدمته

ومن به احتفلوا فالكل إخوان

Uphold the law and raise its people, for they are

For religion and law, helpers with loyalties sound

وأيد الشرع وارفع أهله فهم

للدين والشرع أنصار وأعوان

I conclude with good for all present, and say

May you have reward of pardon and clemency all around

واختم بخير لكل الحاضرين وقل

حسن الجزاء لكم صفح وغفران
