1. No distance from home and homeland stirred my grief,

nor pausing at the traces and blackened ruins,

  2. nor remembering neighbors at Dhu Salam,

nor a night-visiting phantom of my beloved that robbed me of sleep.

  3. Nor did I shed, for love, a tear upon a ruined campsite,

weatherworn, or an empty spring encampment, or a dwelling.

  4. Rather, I weep for him who made heaven weep—so

its rainclouds’ tears never cease streaming down.

  5. It is as though I see Husayn calling out for aid, but none

succors him save the blows of gleaming swords and supple spears.

  6. Steadfast of heart, bold as a lion in the face of

a host of foes, untouched by weakness or cowardice.

  7. God is greatest! How many he drove back with his sword,

alone, and how many a spite-filled host he routed!

  8. The sacred duty owed to the guardians of truth went unheeded,

and the sanctity of God’s Messenger went unpreserved.

  9. How tremendous was that ordeal, whose calamity grew so vast

that beside it the greatest trials seem slight.

  10. O Gate of Remission, O Arks of Salvation, O

treasure of those who seek bounty, O my refuge and support!

  11. O protector of the refuge-seeker, O you in whom I have no hope

save your patronage when I am wrapped in my shroud.

  12. Will a glance from you, O Eye of God, watch over me

through it? Will a compassionate turning from you reach me?

  13. If you do not take me by the hand out of my peril

and rescue me on my morrow, O my master—then who will?

  14. And how could you disown me at the Resurrection, when

I have devoted my love to you, in secret and in public?

  15. Or how, on the Day of Judgment, could he turn away from me—he whose

love alone is the creed my heart has ever professed?

  16. And could your Ahmad be wronged? God forbid!

Such is not my expectation of you, O possessors of grace.

  17. To you, my masters, comes a surpassingly lovely ode,

radiant in the beauty of its splendor, from a Hasanid sayyid.

  18. May God’s blessings be upon you as long as a garden smiles

at the weeping of the raincloud, pouring in abundance.
