1. أي طرفٍ منا يبيت قريراً

    لم تفجر أنهاره تفجيرا

    Which of us spends the night restfully

    When his rivers have not burst forth with life

  2. أي قلبٍ يستر من بعد ما كا

    ن لقلب الهادي النبي سرورا

    What heart can hide joy

    After the heart of the Prophet, the guide found bliss

  3. آه وا حسرتا عليه وقد أخ

    رج عن دار جده مقهورا

    Oh what sorrow for him when he had to depart

    From the abode of his grandfather, vanquished

  4. كاتبوه فجاءهم يقطع البي

    داء يطوي سهولها والوعورا

    They wrote to him and he came cutting through the desert

    Crossing its plains and rugged terrain

  5. أخلفوه ما عاهدوا اللَه من قب

    ل وجاءوا إذ ذاك ظلماً وزورا

    They failed him and broke their covenant with God

    And came to him with injustice and lies

  6. فأتاهم محذراً ونذيراً

    فأبى الظالمون إلا كفورا

    So he warned them, the warner

    But the unjust insisted on denial

  7. وأصروا واستكبروا ونسوا يو

    ماً عبوساً على الورى قمطريرا

    They persisted and grew arrogant and forgot

    A frowning, glowering day for all people

  8. لست أنسى إذا قام في صحبه ين

    ثر من فيه لؤلؤاً منثورا

    I cannot forget when he stood up amidst his comrades

    Scattering pearls from his mouth

  9. قائلاً ليس للعدو بغيةً غي

    ري ولا بد أن أردى عفيرا

    Saying the enemy has no ambition but evil

    I must fell their warriors

  10. إذهبوا فالدجى ستير وما الوق

    ت هجيراً ولا السبيل خطيرا

    Go, for night is a veil and the time is not for rage

    Nor the path fraught with danger

  11. فأجابوه حاش للَه بل نف

    ديك والموت فيك ليس كثيرا

    But they answered: God forbid! We will sacrifice ourselves for you

    And death for your sake is not too much

  12. لا سلمنا إذن إذا نحن أسلم

    ناك وتراً بين العدى موتورا

    We will not submit then, when we have submitted you

    And cut the rope between us and the foe

  13. أنخليك في العدو وحيداً

    ونولي الأدبار عنك نفورا

    Do not let us abandon you, alone with the enemy

    And flee our backs in cowardice

  14. لا أرانا الإله ذلك واختا

    روا بدار البقاء ملكاً كبيرا

    God did not show us that, so they chose

    The abode of eternity a great kingdom

  15. بذلوا الجهد في جهاد الأعادي

    وغدا بعضهم لبعض ظهيرا

    They strove in the jihad against the enemies

    Some becoming a shield for others

  16. ورموا حزب آل حرب بحرب

    مأزق كان شره مستطيرا

    The party of the Harbs they besieged with war

    An evil which had grown wings

  17. كم أراقوا منهم دماً وكأي

    من كمي قد دمروا تدميرا

    How much blood they shed, and how many

    Souls they destroyed with carnage

  18. فدعاهم داعي المنون فسروا

    فكأن المنون جاءت بشيرا

    Then the caller of death summoned them, so they marched on

    As if death had come with glad tidings

  19. فأجابوه مسرعين إلى القت

    ل وقد كان حظهم موفورا

    They answered, hastening into battle

    Their share had been plentiful

  20. فلئن عانقوا السيوف ففي مق

    عد صدقٍ يعانقون الحورا

    If they embraced swords, they embraced sincerity

    In paradise embracing nymphs

  21. ولئن غودروا على الترب صرعى

    فسيجزون جنة وحريرا

    If they lie dead in the dust as martyrs

    They will reap paradise and silk

  22. وغداً يشربون كأساً دهاقاً

    ويلقون نظرةً وسرورا

    Tomorrow drinking a brimming cup

    And glancing about in joy

  23. كان هذا لهم جزاء من اللَه

    وقد كان سعيهم مشكورا

    Such was their reward from God

    Their efforts thanked

  24. فغدا السبط بعده في عراص ال

    طف يبغي من العدو نصيرا

    Then after him marched al Sibt in Ura's valley

    Seeking aid against the foe from his party

  25. كان غوثاً للعالمين فأمسى

    مستغيثاً يا للورى مستجيرا

    He was succour for the worlds but ended

    Seeking help, oh people, imploring aid

  26. فأتاه سهم مشوم به أنق

    ض جديلاً على الصعيد عفيرا

    Then came to him a cursed arrow

    That felled his strong body prone on the ground

  27. فأصاب الفؤاد منه لقد أخ

    طأ من قد رماه خطأ كبيرا

    It pierced his heart - truly the archer

    Had gravely erred with that shot

  28. فأتاه شمر وشمر عن سا

    عد أحقاد صدره تشميرا

    Then came to him Shamr, baring the hatred

    Seething in his chest

  29. وارتقى صدره اجتراء على اللَ

    ه وكان الخب اللثيم جسورا

    He climbed upon his chest with impious audacity

    That wicked wretch always so bold

  30. وحسين يقول إن كنت من يج

    هل قدري فاسأل بذاك خبيرا

    And Husayn said: If you are ignorant of my status

    Ask the experts about that

  31. فيرى رأسه الشريف وعلا

    ه على الرمح وهو يشرق نورا

    He saw his noble severed head raised

    Onto a spear, radiating light

  32. ذبح العلم والنقي إذا براه

    وغدا الحق بعده مقهورا

    The sign and the honest one were slaughtered

    And truth afterwards was subdued

  33. عجباً كيف يذبح السيف من قد

    كان سيفاً على العدى مشهورا

    Strange that the sword should slay one who was himself

    A famed sword against the enemy

  34. عجباً كيف تلفح الشمس شمساً

    ليس ينفك ضوؤها مستنيرا

    Strange that the sun should burn the sun -

    Its brilliance never broken

  35. عجباً للسماء كيف استقرت

    ولبدر السماء يبدوا منيرا

    Wondrous that the sky remained still

    And the moon of heaven shone on

  36. كيف من بعده يضيء أليس ال

    بدر من نور وجهه مستعيرا

    How can it illuminate after him? Is not

    The moon borrowing his light?

  37. غادروه على الثرى وهو ظل

    اللَه في أرضه يقاسي الحرورا

    They left him on the dust, though he was God's shade

    Suffering intense heat

  38. ثم رضوا بالعاديات صدوراً

    لأناس في الناس كانوا صدورا

    Then they were content with the vilest men

    As vanguards defending the borders

  39. قرعوا ويلهم ثغرو رجال

    بهم ذو الجلال يحمي الثغورا

    Against them God of Majesty protects the borders

    They abandoned in the Hijaz the remains of a people

  40. هجروا في الهجير أشلاء قومٍ

    أصبح الذكر بعدهم مهجورا

    Whose memory afterwards faded

    The universe darkened after them

  41. أظلم الكون بعدهم حيث قد كا

    نوا مصابيح للورى وبدورا

    For they were lamps for the world, shining moons

    They violated that esteemed household which had been

  42. استباحوا ذاك الجناب الذي قد

    كان حصناً للمستجير وسورا

    A fortress for the distressed, an impenetrable wall

    In the tents they lit a fire that blazed fiercely

  43. أضرموا في الخيام ناراً تلظى

    فسيصلون في الجحيم سعيرا

    So they will roast in hell's cauldron

    After dragging out the captive women

  44. بعد أن أبرزوا النساء سباياً

    نادبات ولا يجدن مجيرا

    Weeping, finding none to protect them

    Expressing anguish for one slain by the sword of injustice

  45. مبديات الأسى على من بسيف ال

    ظلم قد بات نحره منحورا

    His neck slashed

    Who will gather the spices for his embalming

  46. من يعد الحنوط من يتولى

    غسل قومٍ قد طهروا تطهيرا

    Who will undertake to wash a people purified with martyrdom?

    Who will pray over the leader of prayers? Who will bury

  47. من يصلي على المصلين من يد

    فن تحت التراب تلك البدورا

    Those bodies beneath the earth?

    Who will mourn the Prophet's grandson? The loss inflicted

  48. من يقيم العزاء حزناً على من

    رزؤهم أحزن البشير النذيرا

    Made the messenger himself weep

    For lions who were slaughtered like sacrifices

  49. من لأسد قد جزروا كالأضاحي

    يشتكون الظما وكانوا بحورا

    Complaining of throats that had roared like seas

    For the adornment of worshippers chained

  50. من لزين العباد إذا صفدوه

    بقيود وأوثقوه أسيرا

    By shackles, made a hostage

    Strange that slaves are emboldened against one

  51. عجباً تجتري العبيد على من

    كان للنسا سيداً وأميرا

    Who was a master and prince to women

    For the towering mountain, the mighty peer

  52. من لطود هوى وكان عظيما

    من لغصن ذوي وكان نصيرا

    For the branch of the lofty tree, the helping hand

    For the full moon that dawned with darkness in its burial place

  53. من لبدر أضحى له اللحد برجا

    من للشمس قد كورت تكويرا

    For the shining sun furled up

    For the body laying in the grave's dust

  54. من لجسم في الترب بات تريبا

    من لرأس فوق السنان أديرا

    For the head atop the spear's point

    A forehead never touched by prostration to any but God

  55. وجباهٌ ما عفرت لسوى اللضه

    على الترب عفرت تعفيرا

    Was rubbed in the dirt in debasement

    Pure cheeks never flushed from modesty before people

  56. وخدود شريفةٍ لم تصعر

    قط للناس وسدوها الصخورا

    Were walled in by rocks

    Veiled faces protected from people's eyes

  57. ووجوهٌ مصونةٌ هتكوها

    وأباحوا حجابها المستورا

    Were exposed by them and stripped of covering

    Houses extolled by God were razed

  58. وبيوت برفعها أذن اللَه

    غدت بعد ساكنيها دثورا

    After their dwellers departed

    Oh what immense agony shuddering the pillar of faith

  59. يا له فادحاً تضعضع ركن الد

    دين من عظمه ورزءاً خطيرا

    Due to their mighty stature, a great and serious quaking

    And tribulations that saddened the Prophet and his Guardian

  60. ومصاباً ساء النبي ومولا

    نا علياً وشبراً وشبيرا

    Ali, and all of their household

    Disasters will always unfold, their anguish

  61. وخطوباً يطوي الجديد ولا يفتأ

    في الناس حزنها منشورا

    Still affecting people's grief

    Until the Mahdi, guarding the faith, arises

  62. أو يقوم المهدي حامي حمى الإس

    لام ساقي الأعداء كأساً مريرا

    To make the enemies drink a bitter poison

    May he reach, my Lord, what he hopes for

  63. رب بلغه ما يؤمله واف

    تح له من لدنك فتحاً يسيرا

    And show him from You an easy opening

    Would that I knew when we may see the envoy

  64. ليت شعري متى نرى داعي اللَه

    إلى الحق والسراج المنيرا

    To truth, the shining lamp

    Or when his grandfather's famed sword

  65. أو ما آن أن يرى ظاهراً في

    يده سيف جده مشهورا

    Will be seen raised above his head

    When the banners of victory will unfurl

  66. أو ا آن أن يرى ولواء الن

    نصر من فوق رأسه منشورا

    Through him and wave above his head

    Or when he will wade diving deep into the fray

  67. أو ما آن أن يحور فيستأ

    صل من كان ظن أن لا يحورا

    As one who was deemed never to plunge

    Or when he will bring Islam back

  68. أو ما آن أن يعود به الإس

    لام بعد الخمول غضا نضيرا

    To life after its dormancy, like its first glory

    Or when his caller will proclaim on God's behalf

  69. أو ما آن أن نروح ونغدو

    في ابتهاج والعيش يغدو قريرا

    Good tidings to the people

    That will be a day of joy for the faithful

  70. أو ما آن أن ينادي مناديه

    عن اللَه في الأنام بشيرا

    But on the unbelievers a calamity

    O Household taught by Revelation and spelled out

  71. ذاك يوم للمؤمنين سرور

    وعلى الكافرين كان عسيرا

    By God, has the time for relief not come?

    Forerunners to you, your excellent lineage

  72. يا بني الوحي والألى فيهم قد

    أنزل اللَه هل أتى والطورا

    That God sent down in a precious, scattered string

    Seeking by it your abode, wherein they will not see

  73. دونكم منسليلكم أحمد در

    راً نظيماً ولؤلؤاً منثورا

    Sun or biting cold

    Those praising others are losers, but praising you

  74. يبتغي منكم به جنة لم

    ير فيها شمساً ولا زمهريرا

    Is a trade never depleted or made bankrupt

    Upon you from your Lord are blessings

  75. خسر المادحون غيركم وال

    مدح فيكم تجارةً لن تبورا

    That perfume the cosmos with a diffusing fragrance

  76. وعليكم من ربكم صلوات

    عطر الكون نشرها تعطيرا
