جَحَدْتُ الهَوَى حَتَّى تَبَدَّتْ شُهُودُهُ

فَصَرَّحْتُ بِالْكِتْمَانِ والحَقُّ أَبْلَجُ

I denied passion until its witnesses appeared,

So I confessed to concealment while the truth is evident.

جُفُونِيَ مِنْ ذَاكَ الحِجَابِ قَرِيْحَةٌ

فَلاَ دَمْعَ إلاَّ وَهْوَ بِالدَّمِّ يَخْرُجُ

My eyelids are bleary from that veil,

So no tears flow except mixed with blood.

جَعَلْتُ عَلى قَلْبِي يَدَيَّ تَأَلُّمَا

فَلَمْ أَرَ إِلاَّ جَمْرَةً تَتَأَجَّجُ

I placed my hands over my heart and it ached,

Yet I saw nothing but burning embers.

جُبِلْتُ عَلى حُبِّ لِمَنْ أَنَا عَبْدُهُ

فَلَحْظِيَ إِطْرَاقٌ وَلَفْظِي تَلَجْلُجُ

I'm created to love the one whom I serve,

So my glance is downcast and my words stammer.

جَزَاني هَوَاهُ لَوْعَةً وصَبَابَةً

وإِنِّي إِلى غَيْرِ الجَزَائَيْنِ أَحْوَجُ

His love has afflicted me with agony and madness,

Yet I need more than these two rewards.

جَمَعْتُ لَهُ الضِّدَّيْنَ جَمْعَ ضَرُورَةٍ

فَجَفْنِيَ مَمْطُورٌ وَقَلْبِيَ مُنْضَجُ

I combined the opposites out of necessity,

So my eyelids are rainy and my heart parched.

جَرَيْتُ مَعَ الأَشْوَاقِ مِلءَ عِنَانِهَا

وَقُرْبُكَ مَطْلُوبٌ وَحُبُّكَ مُنْهِجُ

I raced with yearnings at their full speed,

Your nearness is sought and your love paved.

جِنَانُ التَّجَلَّي لِلجَنَانِ مُعَدَّةٌ

وَلاَ جَاهَ أَرْقَى فِي رِضَاهُ وأَعْرُجُ

The gardens of unveiling are ready for the gardens,

And I have no loftier glory than His pleasure and ascent.

جَمِيعُ المُنَى في لَمْحةٍ لَوْ جَنَيْتُهَا

فَمَرْآكَ أَبْهَى فِي العُقُولِ وَأَبْهَجُ

All wishes in one glance, if I attained it,

Your image is most splendid in minds and most joyous.

جَمَالُكَ لي عَيْشٌ وَصَدُّكَ لي رَدَىً

فَأَنْتَ الَّذِي تُبْلِي وَأَنْتَ تُفَرِّجُ

Your beauty is life to me, your rejection is my loss,

You are the one who tests me and you relieve.
