By your essence, the blackness of eyelids is no kohl

Nor did Indian twigs tattoo them

But languor in them is sedition

And the beauty you display is splendor

You made my hearing ecstatic, my reproacher

    As if you were singing

And you gave drink to my passions and tears

Is this coquetry or are you challenging?

In belts lurks a bosom I roam with desire

    And in the shoulders, softness

I witnessed in his face a full moon and drew near

Incidents of his glances, a full moon and new moon

And they said his cheek is wine and wine

And each of them for his brother an opposite

So I said, my purpose in saying sincere

There, yes, and above opposites, friendship

And more wondrous than both is a rose and myrtle

And in myrtle there is no rose

My tears watered knowledge of his crescent moons

So the beauty of the new moon surpasses myrtle

And it saluted the two temples, nothing but

Its dimples, and in it a neck like a pearl necklace

Its eloquent words, why not, and the mouth

Of the beautiful is sugar, and saliva, honey?
