أَئِن كُنتُ في الفِتيانِ آلوتُ سَيِّداً
كَثيرَ شُحوبِ اللَونِ مُختَلِفَ العَصبِ
Was I not once a leader among youth,
Pale of complexion yet steadfast of nerve?
فَما لَكَ مِن مَولاكَ إِلّا حِفاظُهُ
وَما المَرءُ إِلّا بِاللِسانِ وِبِالقَلبِ
You have no protector but God's safekeeping;
Man is naught but tongue and heart.
هُما الأَصغَرانِ الذائِدانِ عَنِ الفَتى
مَكارِهَهُ وَالصاحِبانِ عَلى الخَطبِ
These two are his sentinels, warning
Him of ills, attending him through life's storms.
فَإِلّا أُطِق سَعيَ الكِرامِ فَإِنَّني
أَفُكُّ عَنِ العاني وَأَصبِرُ في الحَربِ
If I cannot live honorably, I shall break
Free of sorrow and show fortitude in war.
