صادتك يوم الرملتين شَعفَرُ

وقد يصير القانصَ المزعفرُ

Your love intoxicated me the day of the two sands, O Shafar,

And the hunter may become the adorned prey.

يا صورة حسّنها المصور

للريم منها جيدُها والمَحجرُ

O image beautified by the Painter!

The gazelle has its neck and forehead for pearls.

حتى إذا ما الاوصياء عسكروا

وقام من تبر النبيّ الجوهرُ

Until the protectors marched

And the essence of the Prophet's incense arose,

ومن بني العباس نبع اصفر

ينميه فرع طيب وعنصرُ

And from the Abbasids a yellow stream sprang forth,

Growing through a good branch and element,

اقبل بالناس الهوى المستبهر

وصاح في الليل نهار أنورُ

Passion came to the people, dazzling,

And it called in the night, a shining day,

انا الذي لو قيل اني اشعرُ

جلي الضباب الرجزُ المخبرُ

I am the one who, if it were said I was a poet,

My poetry would unveil the fog and inform prose,

لما مضت لي اشهرٌ واشهر

قلت النفسٍ تزدهي فتصبرُ

After months and months passed me by,

I said to myself: “Be patient, the soul grows stronger.”

لا يستخفنك ركب يصدر

لا منجد يمضي ولا مغورُ

Do not take lightly a band that marches forth,

Neither stellar nor sinking.

وخالفي الانباء فهي المحشر

او يسمع الخليفة المطهرُ

And news differs, it is the resurrection,

Or the purified Caliph will hear,

مني فاني كل جنح اخضر

وان بالانبار غيثا يهمرُ

From me, for I am every green wing,

And rains pour in Anbar,

والغيث يرجى والديار تنضر

ما كان إلا أن اتاها العسكرُ

The rain is hoped for and the houses thrive,

It was nothing but the army came upon it,

حتى زهاها مسجد ومنبر

لم يبق من مروان عين تنظرُ

Until it flourished with mosque and pulpit,

Nothing remained of Marwan's eye to see,

لا غائب ولا اناس حضّر

هيهات اودى المنعم المعقرُ

Neither absent nor people present,

Alas! The stubborn conferrer has perished!

وأمست الأنبار دارا تعمر

وخربت من الشام أدورُ

And the Anbar became a house rebuilt,

While from Syria its walls crumbled.

خمص وباب التبن والموقر

ودمرت بعد امتناع تدمرُ

Khamis, Bab Tebn, and Mouqar collapsed,

Tadmor collapsed after resisting,

وواسط لم يبق الا القرقر

منها وإلا الدير بان الأخضرُ

And only Erqer remained of Wasit,

Other than the monastery of Al-Akhdhar,

أين أبو الورد واين الكوثر

وأين مروان وأين الأشقر

Where is Abu Ward and where is Al-Kawthar?

And where is Marwan and where is Al-Ashqar?

وأين فَلُّ لم يفت محيَّرُ

واين عاديكم المجمهر

And where is Fall who was not confused?

And where is your conferrer?

وعامر وعامر واعصر

And Aamir and Aamir and press them!
