1. Evening found you at al-Anbar, O son of Muhammad,

unable to make your way anywhere else.

  2. Woe is me for you, and woe to all my family—

woe and long lamentation throughout our lives.

  3. Let the women weep for you, shedding tears,

and let the men weep for you with loud wailing.

  4. Who can show seemly patience at your loss? For mine was not

seemly—my patience in grieving you the morning you departed.

  5. Others find substitutes for him, but I am a man

who, were I to die of grief, would find no substitute.

  6. Generosity perished when you departed—for the son of Muhammad

I made it your equal and counterpart there in the dust.

  7. I asked all the people after you,

and found even the most generous of those I asked a miser.

  8. Was I left behind after you only for my misery—for that which

leaves even the mighty among men abased?

  9. Was I left behind after you only for my misery—for that which

leaves the well-fed among the dependents gaunt?

  10. I shall swear a true and righteous oath:

by God, no request of mine has been granted since you.
