Is there, anywhere in the land, one who lies down awaiting God’s provision?
Or is there none? For a rough surface leaves his skin mottled.
Fasting has come to kneel, like a camel, in the middle of our courtyard.
Would that fasting were in some land cut off from us by rugged wilds!
If I fast, my belly pains me and leaves me restless—
within my ribs, from the pang of hunger and thirst.
And if I go out by night toward their mosque,
my eyesight troubles me—it has already been betrayed by bleary dimness.
