1. I appeal to you by the bond of kinship that has brought

    our nearest and our farthest kin together in closeness:

  2. that you will surely listen—you, the noblest of all who have walked—

    to a poet who hopes for a poet’s reward.

  3. The fast arrived, and I observed it in devotion,

    with all the hope of a fasting worshipper.

  4. And in the experience of fasting and its heat, I met

    two ordeals that were measured against torment sealed shut.

  5. I prostrated until my forehead was split open

    by the pebbles butting against me in the mosque.

  6. So graciously release me, on account of your delay and what

    you have already made me undergo of affliction lying in wait.
