1. وأصفَرٍ نَرجِسيّ اللَون نمّامِ

    مُبَرّإٍ من صنوف النَقص والذّام

    With yellow narcissus-hued, fault-finding busybody

    Filled with all kinds of flaws and blame

  2. زها اعتِلاءً على النمام يَجمَعُهُ

    به اسمُهُ فِعلَ ذي لُبّ وإِلهامِ

    Proudly rising above the busybody that brings him together

    With his name an active verb of wit and inspiration

  3. فقال لي الفَضلُ إِنّي في النهار وفي

    ليلي أَنِمُّ وفي صُبحي وإِظلامي

    So Virtue said to me, by day and night

    I sleep, at dawn and dusk

  4. وأنت يا مُدَّعي اسمي طول يومك لا

    تُدنى اطِّراحاً إلى خيشوم شمّامِ

    While you, pretender of my name, all day

    Do not come near, lying down, to the nostril of a busybody

  5. وانّ لونَك من لون النحاسِ ولو

    ني في مَلاحته ضربٌ من السامي

    And your color is of brass

    If I were to touch it, it would be a kind of poisoning
