I yearned for poets, O Ibn Suleim,
Yet my father refused my tongue to craft poetry.
My heart overflowed with grief,
And my inner demons mocked my ineloquence.
Eyes promised my complexion
Would remain as darkened among colors.
Fate turned matters upside down -
How cleverly it blocked my expression!
I wished I had been eloquent in verse
So my talents could partially shine.
Yet I stumbled in my steps
By the vastness of sky and land.
So to whom but you, O Ibn Suleim,
Can I complain of my plight and what has pained me?
Relieve me of what my arms cannot encompass
With an eloquent and righteous young man
Who can make people understand my poetry,
For expression has evaded me.
Then thank me, O Ibn Suleim,
Wherever my abode in the lands may be.
You will find poems aplenty
With each tongue racing toward you.
