1. Look at the river and marvel

    at the beauty of its aspect and its ground.

  2. It has settled amid gardens

    of fresh blossoms.

  3. There, a splendid bahār flower

    appeared and adorned the earth.

  4. It is like a neck of gold

    gleaming within a collar of silver.

  5. And narcissus, pale as the forsaken lover

    who has parted with sleep;

  6. and elegant daisies,

    their robes gleaming white.

  7. It embroidered them with gold—

    the overflowing eye of dew.

  8. And the broad bean has revealed

    in its blossom beauty in its purest form.

  9. The river seems a horizon

    of heaven embracing its earth.

  10. It has clothed both its banks

    in the choicest blossoms,

  11. just as Ibn ʿAbbād, the no—

    —ble hero, has clothed his honor in protection:

  12. generous, treating wealth roughly,

    forever dispersing it anew.

  13. He possesses a share of high standing,

    though humility has bitten into it.
