1. Indeed, my heart finds comfort

    in the companionship of the pair,

  2. where my cares are banished

    by wines long aged in jars,

  3. with a gazelle-like youth of coquettish

    charm, slender and bewitching.

  4. He gazes at me with a glance

    and a drowsy eye;

  5. he has lent his graceful swaying

    to the swaying boughs.

  6. When he smiles in proud coquetry,

    his lips part to reveal daisies.

  7. I shall surely anger my reproacher

    over him, casting off all restraint.

  8. Rise, my companion, and keep passing

    our cups, never flagging;

  9. bring it, like the lightning’s gleam

    that flashed from Naʿmān—

  10. golden, from what was laid away

    by Khosrow Anūshirwān.

  11. So pure and delicate, it has passed beyond

    perception by the eyes;

  12. nor can it be apprehended through the

    senses, nor yet by minds.

  13. A spirit born of wine, but

    without a body.

  14. Its fragrance belongs to musk,

    and its color to saffron.

  15. Whoever says, without knowledge,

    that among mankind there is a peer

  16. to the supremacy of ʿAlī’s two sons

    has uttered calumny.

  17. Their hands pour forth gifts

    and stream with bounty.
