1. Many a day we spent

    in conversation and tender reproach.

  2. We brought together two wines:

    wine and the beloved’s saliva.

  3. We quenched the soul’s burning thirst

    through nearness and close approach.

  4. And, in longing, I sipped at

    his sweet incisors.

  5. We asked for that thing

    openly, and he answered.

  6. We journeyed in search of the master,

    the magnanimous lord, the choicest of men.

  7. There we beheld glory and wealth,

    the sea and its surging flood.

  8. And we beheld the best of people,

    and the sweetest of them in speech—

  9. ever alert, discerning through insight

    what had passed and slipped from sight.

  10. Refined by the discernment of learning,

    he fears no cause for blame.

  11. He knew that delight lies in giving,

    so he gave and rewarded.

  12. When the stock is noble,

    the branch thrives and flourishes.
